Scotland World Cup star in line for shock Man Utd move

Despite Scotland's disappointing performance against Brazil, Manchester United are interested in one key player.

Manchester United could make a move for one of Scotland's key players at the World Cup.

Late on Wednesday night, Scotland suffered a major blow to their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the World Cup as they lost 3-0 to Brazil at the Miami Stadium.

Two goals from Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior and one from Manchester United's Matheus Cunha sealed the bruising defeat which saw Scotland plummet down the table of the best third-placed teams.

Across Scotland's opening three matches there have been several players that have failed to live up to the expectations heading into the tournament, most notably ex-United midfielder Scott McTominay.

However, there is one Scottish star that clearly has done enough to impress Manchester United as the club are reportedly considering making a surprise move for him this summer.

According to The Sun's Samuel Luckhurst, Angus Gunn has emerged as a possible goalkeeping target for United following his performances for Scotland in North America.

The 30-year-old was released by Nottingham Forest following the end of the 2025/26 season but kept his place as Scotland's number one for all three group stage fixtures.

Across Scotland's three World Cup fixtures, he has kept one clean sheet against Haiti before conceding one to Morocco and three to Brazil.

Gunn previously came through City's academy when Jason Wilcox, who is now United's director of football, was coach and later its head.

He then went on to spend time at Norwich City, Southampton and Stoke City before arriving at Nottingham Forest ahead of the 2025/26 season, making just one appearance for the midlands club.

Although Gunn wouldn't be required to start for United, the report claims that the club are looking to sign an experienced keeper ahead of the planned sales of both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

For that reason United have also been linked with Karl Darlow, with the 35-year-old's contract with Leeds United set to expire next week.

However, with Darlow still holding discussions with Leeds over a renewal, it is unclear if he will still be available as a free agent in the coming weeks.

Will Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir stay at Man United?

As it stands, Onana is set to report for United's pre-season training in two weeks following his loan spell with Turkish club Trabzonspor in 2025/26.

The former Inter Milan and Ajax goalie could be involved in United's opening friendlies, but it is still clear that the plan is to sell Onana over the summer.

The same goes for Bayindir, who is expected to return to Turkey amid interest from Besiktas.

Bayindir made six Premier League appearances for United last season but failed to impress across any of them, conceding 11 goals.

The Turkey international had been on international duty at the World Cup but following shock defeats to Australia and Paraguay, the 28-year-old and his countrymen have now been eliminated.

Bayindir could therefore be available for the majority of United’s pre-season campaign following a mandatory three-week break.
