Mexico star rushed to hospital immediately after England defeat with horror injury

Mexico star Santiago Gimenez was rushed to hospital as the full-time whistle blew in their 3-2 World Cup last 16 defeat to England with a serious ankle injury.

Gimenez was brought on as a late substitute for Mexico as they looked to equalise and send the game to extra time.

But in the 98th minute, the AC Milan forward landed awkwardly on his ankle while chasing the ball and fell to the ground in agony.

He subsequently attempted to limp off, and was then taken to hospital while England celebrated their famous victory in the Estadio Azteca.

Gimenez's injury meant Mexico played out the final minutes with 10 men, just like the Three Lions after Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card on 54 minutes when England were 2-1 up.

According to Mexican journalist Ruben Rodriguez, Gimenez has been diagnosed with a second-degree sprain to his ankle and is expected to miss around eight weeks of action.

England suffer Henderson injury worry

Thomas Tuchel's side didn't leave the Azteca without injury concerns of their own - in the most bizarre of circumstances.

During their post-match celebrations, midfielder Jordan Henderson lost his footing while climbing over an advertising board and fell directly on to his wrist.

The Brentford midfielder is currently being assessed, but Tuchel has said that his injury 'looks really bad'

"Not good, not good," he told BBC. "Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad."

"He injured his wrist, he's gone to hospital. It's quite a serious injury," Tuchel expanded in his post-match press conference. "It doesn't fit with the night. I don't know if there will be a procedure."

Henderson hasn't made an appearance during the World Cup so far, though did manage to be shown a yellow card during England's win over Mexico.

Jude Bellingham had opened the scoring for England on 36 minutes, before scoring again two minutes to cap off a dream start in the Azteca.

Julian Quinones equalised for the co-hosts on 42 minutes with a powerful effort that flew past Jordan Pickford from 12 yards out.

Quansah was then sent off early in the second half, though it was England who got the next goal when Harry Kane converted a 60th-minute penalty which was won by Anthony Gordon

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez then pulled a goal back again from Mexico, also from the penalty spot, on 69 minutes after Kane was adjudged to have fouled midfielder Brian Jimenez following a VAR check.

England, therefore, had to play the final 32 minutes of the match - including 11 minutes of additional time - with 10 players and a goal up, but held on through some superb defending.

Newcastle's Dan Burn was brought on as a 75th-minute substitute for his first appearance of the tournament, and played a vital role in seeing England over the line in Mexico City.

"I don't think I'll ever forget that night," he told reporters. "The stadium, the occasion ... crazy game. Really, really proud of the lads. We rose to the challenge and we're delighted.

"We've shown that we can win in lots of different ways. I think that sums up the character of the team. We've talked about this brotherhood that we've building over the last one-and-a-half to two years now, and I think that came to the fore today. I thought, to a man, everyone was excellent.

"I think it'll be a World Cup match that goes down in history."

England will play Norway in the quarter-finals after they defeated five-time winners Brazil 2-1 in New Jersey.
