The winners of the first European Cup final of the Champions League era are set to pay a heavy price for failing to qualify for next season's tournament.

After their dramatic elimination in the league phase of the 2025-26 competition, Ligue 1 giants Marseille lost their manager and missed out on a return to the Champions League.

Habib Beye took over after Roberto De Zerbi left Marseille for Tottenham Hotspur but hasn't been able to match the success of his predecessor.

Marseille have drifted out of the Champions League places and are now in sixth place, four points away from where they need to be with just one game against Rennes to come.

That match comes with its own significance. Rennes are fifth and could finish with a berth in the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League.

For OM, the consequences of not qualifying for European club football's premier competition could be dire.

"Having missed out on Champions League football next season, the club is facing a gaping hole in its finances," reports Foot Mercato.

OM have qualified for the Champions League in three of the previous five seasons.

"The Marseille club's economic model, built on massive investments with Champions League revenue as a prerequisite for its viability, has just collapsed.

"The DNCG [National Directorate of Management Control], which is very concerned about the financial health of the 1993 European champions, is preparing to thoroughly scrutinise Marseille's projected accounts."

Marseille face a June 30 deadline and the risk of 'sporting sanctions' and possible expulsion from the Europa League or Conference League, should they qualify.

What Champions League failure means for Marseille

"According to our information, an unprecedented survival operation is underway," reports Foot Mercato.

"Olympique de Marseille absolutely must sell players before the June 30th deadline, and the entire squad is up for sale."

Marseille should have no problem offloading several players, with suitors likely for some of their top performers despite a disappointing end to the season.

Captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is likely to fetch a fee at 30 years of age. Algeria striker Amine Gouiri will be in demand and there should be keen buyers for defenders Leonardo Balerdi and CJ Egan-Riley too.

Last and least, English forward Mason Greenwood will find a new home. He is reported to have three years left on his contract.
