Top 20 Premier League transfer spends adjusted for inflation revealed and one club dominates the list

After a huge transfer window for Premier League clubs, how does it compare to historical summers?

The 20 biggest Premier League transfer windows, adjusted for inflation, have been revealed and one club dominates the list.

It has been a busy summer transfer window so far for England's top clubs.

All of the Premier League's traditional big six have already spent more than £100 million and are still looking to make further additions.

After Thursday's news that Alexander Isak has asked to leave Newcastle United, it is possible that the British record transfer record will also be broken.

If Liverpool sign the Swedish striker, it would push their transfer outlay this summer towards the £400 million mark.

But that would still not come close to the biggest window in Premier League history when adjusted for inflation.

According to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, Chelsea's 2003/04 spending spree is the largest on record at the equivalent of £916.4 million in today's money.

And the Blues do not just dominate the list of the biggest transfer windows ever, they take the top four spots on the list.

What did Chelsea do in the transfer market?

Chelsea's record-breaking window came immediately after Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003, as the Russian billionaire was keen to make a statement.

They brought in 11 players, with big fees paid for Hernan Crespo, Damien Duff and Adrian Mutu.

Their most successful deals though were defensive midfielder Claude Makelele from Real Madrid and attacking midfielder Joe Cole from West Ham.

Chelsea also claim second, third and fourth on the list due to their windows in 2022/23, 2005/06 and 2004/05.

In 2022/23 they spent £838.2 million, with Enzo Fernandez, Wesley Fofana and Mykhailo Mudryk the most expensive additions.

Between 2004 and 2006 under Jose Mourinho they became one of Europe's best teams, bringing in Didier Drogba, Petr Cech and Arjen Robben during that period.

What other teams are on the list?

After Chelsea's dominance, it is Manchester City who take the next four spots on the list.

Three of those came during the early years of Abu Dhabi takeover in September 2008.

Robinho arrived as a shock signing on deadline day in 2008 but the club made more successful additions in later windows, including David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

City's most recent transfer splurge was following Pep Guardiola's first season at the Etihad in 2017/18.

That summer saw the additions of Bernardo Silva, Ederson and Kyle Walker, who all formed key components of Guardiola's team.

Although this summer's transfer window has been eye-catching, no team has come close to matching those Chelsea and Manchester City windows.
