Oscar Earned Eye-Watering Amount of Money in China as Retirement Decision Made

The former Chelsea midfielder is poised to hang up his boots over a medical issue.

Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar is poised to retire from football over a medical issue, according to reports.

The 34-year-old joined the Stamford Bridge side in 2012 from Brazilian side Internacional for an estimated transfer fee of up to £25m.

During his time at the Premier League side, Oscar would go on to score 38 goals in 203 appearances in all competitions across four-and-a-half seasons.

The Brazil international won two Premier League titles, the League Cup and the Europa League during his time at Chelsea, before his exit was finalised during the winter transfer window of the 2016-17 season where he moved to the Chinese Super League side Shanghai Port.

Chelsea ended up making a substantial profit on Oscar after a reported transfer fee of £60m was agreed with Shanghai Port, which was an Asian transfer record.

Oscar was one of several players to leave top European leagues around that time due to the financial muscle that the Chinese Super League had.

Between 2017 and 2024, Oscar scored 77 goals in 248 games for Shanghai Sport, winning the Chinese Super League on three occasions, one Chinese FA Cup, and the Chinese FA Super Cup.

At the end of 2024, Oscar returned to his native Brazil and joined Sao Paulo, where he came through the youth team ranks at, and penned a three-year deal there.

For his country, Oscar has 12 goals in 48 caps for Brazil, winning the 2013 Confederations Cup and was part of the 2014 World Cup squad which reached the semi-finals and scored the only goal of that game for his nation as the hosts were humiliated 7-1 by eventual winners Germany.

However, it appears Oscar could be about to hang up his boots due to medical reasons after he collapsed while in training for Sao Paulo in November.

The attacker was taken to hospital after he fell unconscious while on an exercise bike, and he has not trained since this happened.

Brazilian outlet Globo now reports that the player has spoken to Sao Paulo about his future and told them of his intention to retire from professional football, with a formal announcement confirming this now expected.

Having played in China for almost eight years, Oscar accrued a sum of money which will mean he will likely not have to work again in his lifetime, should his retirement from football be confirmed in due course.

Oscar had a weekly wage at Shanghai Port of reportedly £400,000.

That means that across his time in China, Oscar would have earned a cool £175m in wages.
