Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer wound Newcastle United fans up with a perfect piece of s***housery in their Carabao Cup quarter-final clash.

The Blues won the dramatic encounter 4-2 on penalties with a stoppage-time equaliser from Mykhailo Mudryk forcing the game to go the distance.

Callum Wilson's 16th-minute goal set Newcastle on their way and they appeared set for a second successive Carabao Cup semi-final but Eddie Howe's side couldn't get over the line.

Their wait for silverware continues while Chelsea will find out tonight who they will face over two legs in the next round.

The match was packed full of controversial incidents with Blues player Moises Caicedo lucky to stay on the pitch after a poor challenge that left Anthony Gordon injured.

VAR isn't in use at this stage of the competition so the incident was unable to be reviewed and Bruno Guimaraes was also lucky to stay on the field for his own ill-advised challenge on Ian Maatsen.

It was a fiercely-contested clash and midfielder Palmer stoked the fire by taunting the Newcastle fans with a shushing gesture towards the away end.

The Englishman has been on fire in a Chelsea shirt since his move from Manchester City; scoring six goals in his first 10 Premier League appearances for the club.

He has cemented his place as a key player in Mauricio Pochettino's best XI as a result and received a well-earned England senior team call-up.

The boyhood City man made the shock move to West London for an initial £40 million back in the summer, with a view to getting more game-time.

The 21-year-old signed a seven-year contract, as has been customary under Todd Boehly's regime, and the move seems to be paying off already.

He was a part of City's treble-winning side last season so arrived at Stamford Bridge already with experience of winning the biggest competitions and has played an integral role in the club's recent revival under Pochettino.

While Chelsea have struggled to compete in the past few seasons, the Carabao Cup could provide them with a great chance of lifting silverware this term.
