Top 10 English goalscorers in Champions League history as Harry Kane nears lead with Bayern Munich brace

Kane is close to the top spot.

Harry Kane has equalled Raheem Sterling in the top 10 list of English Champions League goalscorers - but who are the other eight players to make up the rankings?

Kane netted a brace for Bayern Munich on Tuesday night as they beat Lazio 3-0 at the Allianz Arena.

The result qualifies Thomas Tuchel's side for the quarter-finals of this season's Champions League, following on from a disappointing 1-0 defeat in the first leg in Italy.

Kane scored his fifth and sixth Champions League goals of what has been a productive individual season for Bayern. But who does he still trail, and who is trailing behind him? Let's take a look at which Englishman has scored the most goals in the tournament proper.

10. Phil Foden (14 goals)

Manchester City star Phil Foden is currently in the midst of his most productive Champions League season, having netted four goals and provided three assists.

With up to six games left for City in this year's competition, Foden will be hoping to further solidify his spot in the top 10 - and push further up the leaderboard.

9. Theo Walcott (15 goals)

Another one-club man in this list - in terms of European goals - Theo Walcott scored all 15 of his Champions League goals for Arsenal before his retirement last year at the age of 34.

His most productive season in the competition was actually his final campaign as a Champions League footballer, as he scored four times in six appearances during the 2016/17 campaign.

David Beckham spread out his 107 Champions League appearances across spells with Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain - although he only scored goals for the former two clubs.

He scored two goals in United's successful 1998/99 campaign, while his most productive season for any club was also with Sir Alex Ferguson's side in 2001/02, when he netted on five occasions.

7. Andy Cole (18 goals)

The second - and certainly not the last - United star on this list, Andy Cole scored five Champions League goals in consecutive seasons to become England's record goalscorer in the competition for a number of years.

He scored five goals in 10 appearances in 1998/99, including the infamous winning goal in the semi-final second leg against Juventus in Turin.

6. Steven Gerrard (21 goals)

One of only two names on this list to score in a Champions League final, Gerrard netted a memorable strike in Liverpool's iconic triumph over AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005.

His most productive season was during the 2008/09 campaign, when he scored seven goals in just 10 games. Unfortunately for Rafael Benitez's side, though, Liverpool were knocked out at the quarter-final stage following a 7-5 aggregate defeat by Chelsea.

5. Frank Lampard (23 goals)

Chelsea's all-time record goalscorer, Frank Lampard was prolific in European competition - although not quite to the level of his Premier League goalscoring feats.

The England midfielder scored 23 goals in the Champions League, including three goals in 12 games as Chelsea lifted the trophy for the first time in their history in 2012.

4. Paul Scholes (24 goals)

The final central midfielder on this list, Paul Scholes overtook team-mate Andy Cole to become England's record Champions League goalscorer for a brief period.

He was one of United's main goal threats around the turn of the century, and scored six goals in 12 appearances during the 2000/01 campaign.

That goal threat waned as his career drew to a close, but he still found the net on three occasions in 2009/10.

3. Harry Kane (27 goals)

Bayern Munich's star striker now has 27 goals to his name, with his six Bayern Munich goals adding to the 21 he scored as Tottenham's key marksman.

It likely won't be long before Kane tops this list - can he do it before the season is out?

2. Raheem Sterling (27 goals)

Raheem Sterling hasn't had an opportunity to add to his superb tally of 27 Champions League goals this season with Chelsea - and barring a miracle, he won't be able to do so next season either.

Between 2017 and 2023, though, Sterling was English football's star attacking player in Europe's top competition, netting 22 goals in that time period as he helped Manchester City reach the knockout stages on numerous occasions.

A move away from Stamford Bridge might be in order if he wants to add to his numbers, though.

1. Wayne Rooney (30 goals)

It couldn't really be anyone else, could it?

As soon as he burst onto the scene with a debut hat-trick for Manchester United against Fenerbahce in 2004, it was almost taken as gospel that Wayne Rooney would propel himself to becoming England's record goalscorer.

He never scored more than five goals in a single Champions League campaign, but is one of only two players on this list to score in a European final.

And while his goal against Barcelona at Wembley in 2011 ended up only being a consolation, Rooney did lift the Champions League crown with United three years earlier. How long will he keep his top spot?
