Premier League referee Jarred Gillett has come under fire from Arsenal fans for his performance in the Gunners’ last-gasp 2-1 win against Newcastle United – but which two teams is he essentially ‘banned’ from officiating?
It appeared to be Newcastle’s day at St James’ Park when summer signing Nick Woltemade headed past David Raya 34 minutes in.
Throughout the match, there were several contentious refereeing decisions and VAR calls from the officiating team, made up of referee Gillett, assistants Ian Hussin and Scott Ledger, fourth official Anthony Taylor and VAR Darren England alongside assistant VAR Steve Meredith.
On 14 minutes, Arsenal were awarded a penalty before the decision was overturned after an intervention from VAR.

Viktor Gyokeres latched onto Jacob Murphy’s backpass before being brought down by Magpies ‘keeper Nick Pope.
Gillett then awarded the spot kick, but replays suggest that the English goalkeeper did, in fact, get a touch on the ball.

Gillett’s decision was overturned before he made the on-pitch announcement to the delight of the home crowd.
"After review, the Newcastle goalkeeper plays the ball and there is no foul,” Gillett said.

“The final decision is drop ball."
However, not everyone agreed with the decision, including Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta, who insisted that VAR shouldn’t have intervened “if it is not a clear and obvious error”.
Mikel Merino nodded home Declan Rice’s in-swinging ball on 84 minutes to draw the away side level.
Then, on 85 minutes, Arsenal centre-back Gabriel attempted to slide tackle Anthony Elanga when the ball hit his arm in the penalty area. Gillett ruled that the movement did not warrant a penalty before the decision was upheld by VAR.

On X, The Premier League Match Centre said: "The referee's call of no penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the ball deemed to have deflected off Gabriel's shin and onto his arm."

The Brazilian then went on to score a last-gasp headed winner in second-half stoppage time.
Despite securing the three points, some Arsenal fans were not pleased with Gillett’s performance and took to social media.
One said: “Jarred Gillett is literally a Liverpool fan. He's refed 4 out of our 6 games thus far. The league is cooked.”
Another added: “Jarred Gillett has been involved in four out of six of Arsenal’s Premier League games so far this season. There are over twenty Premier League officials… How can this be right? His bias couldn’t be more obvious this afternoon."
A third claimed: “Jarred Gillett is an LFC fan who’s been involved in 4/6 of our PL matches so far.”
Australia-born Gillett has previously been reported to be a Liverpool fan, with FOX Sports commentator Brenton Speed all but confirming this during a podcast appearance, relayed by Liverpool.com.
"He [Gillett] had to fill out a document when he agreed to join the referees’ board over there, and you have to fill in the team you supported as a boy/man, and he said it was Liverpool,” said Speed.
“So that means you’re taken off all their games, home or away.”
Due to his supposed support, he is essentially not allowed to officiate Liverpool or their city rivals, Everton, but can take charge of Man United and Arsenal games.
