Three free agents Arsenal could still sign to bolster their attack despite transfer window closing

Free agents are still available if Arsenal - and other clubs - find themselves in desperate situations.

Arsenal can still add to their squad before the end of the season despite not signing a player during the winter transfer window.

Premier League clubs can no longer complete permanent transfers or loans past the 11pm deadline on Monday - though there may be some deals that can sneak through if a deal sheet was completed between 9pm and 11pm on deadline day.

Free agents can still be signed, however, though can only be registered if a club has a space left in their registered squad.

Arsenal submitted a 25-man squad to the Premier League in September but that list included Gabriel Jesus, who is out for the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury against Manchester United last month.

With it being likely that the Gunners will unregister Jesus from their squad selection for the second half of the season, there will be one space left for them to bring players in.

And although David Ornstein reports that manager Mikel Arteta did not want to bring in a short-term solution and instead focus on the summer window, his hand may be forced if his squad suffers any more injuries in attacking areas - particularly to striker Kai Havertz.

Here are three free agents that Arsenal can technically still sign if they need to take desperate measures.

Maxi Gomez

Former Valencia striker Maxi Gomez was linked with a move to Manchester United in 2020 at a time when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were in need of attacking reinforcements.

The Uruguayan was 24 at the time and had scored 10 goals in his debut La Liga season with Valencia, having previously starred at Celta Vigo.

Gomez was sold to Turkish side Trabzonspor in 2022 but has had a bizarre decline since then, failing to score a single goal in 31 appearances on loan at Cadiz last season.

The 28-year-old is unlikely to have high-end suitors after having his Trabzonspor contract terminated in September but his previous goal record could still make him attractive.

Diego Costa

In a move that would represent theatre value more than anything else - given how he used to terrorise Arsenal defences while at Chelsea - Diego Costa is still playing at 36 but is without a club after leaving Brazilian side Gremio.

The former Spain international is not the player he once was and had a difficult spell at Wolves between 2022 and 2023, scoring once in 23 matches, but if Arsenal wanted a battering ram up front then Costa could still do a job - albeit not a prolific goalscoring one.

Mariano Diaz

It wasn't too long ago that Mariano Diaz was one of the more in-demand forwards in world football after leaving Real Madrid to fire in the goals at Ligue 1 side Lyon.

The Dominican Republic international scored 18 goals in the 2017/18 campaign but was then bought back by Real, who promptly reduced him to a bit-part role for five seasons.

Mariano joined Sevilla on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 but made little impact and is now without a club. The time may have gone for him to a regular starter at an elite club, but he has proven goalscoring pedigree.
