A surprise name has thrown his hat into the ring to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager.

Southgate resigned as Three Lions boss on Tuesday after nearly eight years in charge.

During that time, he reached two European Championship finals, with his final game in charge being the 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Since the announcement, the FA have reportedly compiled a long list of candidates that includes Graham Potter, Eddie Howe, Mauricio Pochettino and several other managers.

And according to The Telegraph, the FA will also consider appointing Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, who is well-liked by their technical director, John McDermott.

But now, a new name has put himself forward - and it is somebody that no England fan will have thought of.

The Sun report that former Germany manager Joachim Low wants the England job in what would be a surprise return to football management.

Low hasn't worked in football since being sacked as Germany boss after a 2-0 defeat to England in the last 16 stage of Euro 2020.

It is claimed that the 62-year-old would be 'happy' to talk to the FA following Southgate's resignation, and his candidacy would represent something different to many of the other candidates in the frame.

Low gained extensive experience of international football with Germany, taking them over following Jurgen Klinsmann's departure in 2006 and staying in charge for 15 years.

He also won the World Cup in 2014, and Germany finished as runner-up at Euro 2008, where they lost to Spain in the final.

But results tailed off during his final years in charge, with Germany exiting the 2018 World Cup at the group stage before their early Euro 2020 exit.

In October 2022, Low signalled his intention to return to football management, telling German outlet Kicker: "I already have the intention of taking on a task in football again.

"I feel motivated again when I watch football now - that wasn't the case for a few months. If I feel a task appeals to me, I'm ready to attack again."

He was, however, one of a number of high-profile names to reportedly turn down the vacant Bayern Munich role earlier this year, with the club eventually appointing Vincent Kompany.
