Archie Brown finds out during post-match interview that Fenerbahce manager Ismail Kartal has 'resigned'

Fenerbahce defender Archie Brown was visibly stunned after being told that manager Ismail Kartal had announced his resignation following the club's Champions League clash against Roma.

Kartal, who was appointed Fenerbahce boss in June this year, announced his sudden resignation to the press on Thursday evening, shortly after the Turkish side recorded a 1-1 draw in Istanbul.

Speaking to reporters, he said as per GZT: "Throughout the season, during the training camps we held with our players, our president and managers tried to help us. Those were wonderful days.

"As of this evening, I congratulate my players and I am resigning. I thank the press, the fans, and my fellow players who have supported me until today."

"I have left my post tonight," added Kartal. "I made this decision to pave the way for my club. I have decided to resign from my position. I will never return. Good evening to everyone."

Moments later, goalscorer Archie Brown was conducting his post-match interview alongside an interpreter when news filtered through about Kartal's unexpected decision.

Brown was asked the following question by a reporter: "Ismail Kartal resigned from his position. Did he speak with you?"

With a puzzled look on his face, a confused Brown turned to his interpreter and asked: "What do you mean he resigned? He's not the coach anymore? He said this just now? I didn't know about this."

After taking charge of Fenerbahce for the fourth time this summer following previous spells in 2014, 2022 and 2023, Kartal walks away with a mixed record on his CV.

He led the Turkish giants to six wins, three draws and two defeats across his 11 games in charge, but pressure mounted after those losses came in the Super Lig. As a result, they sit ninth in the table.

Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi hit with UEFA bans after "offensive gesture"

On the subject of Fenerbahce, Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi have both been punished by UEFA for "offensive gestures" that were made during their heated Champions League win over Lyon.

Last month, Fenerbahce beat Lyon 3-2 on aggregate in the play-off to qualify for the competition's league phase following goals but there was huge controversy at the final whistle.

Being a former Marseille player, Guendouzi was jeered throughout the game and his emotions got the better of him as he appeared to taunt the supporters.

He was seen shouting "Allez l'OM" to the camera as he showed his allegiance to Marseille and followed up by flipping off the fans.

Mason Greenwood, who joined Fenerbahce from Marseille this summer, was also present and subject to the UEFA investigation.

The former Manchester United forward was given a one-match suspended ban which is "subject to a probationary period of one year", on top of a £26,000 fine, for "violating the basic rules of decent conduct".
