Shock name no one expected ‘among FA targets’ to replace Gareth Southgate as England boss

A shock candidate has reportedly been included in the English Football Association’s list of targets to replace Gareth Southgate.

On Sunday night, England suffered another disappointment as they were beaten by Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Since then, Southgate’s future has been plunged into darkness and on Tuesday, his departure was confirmed.

Throughout his time as manager, Southgate led his team to two Euro finals, and one semi-final in the FIFA World Cup.

The 53-year-old said in a statement: “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.

“But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”

Since Southgate’s departure was confirmed, the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Jurgen Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino, Graham Potter, Eddie Howe and Frank Lampard have all been linked with the England job.

On Wednesday afternoon, it was revealed that a new name had been added to the list.

As reported by The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is expected to be on the list of candidates being considered to become the next Three Lions boss.

The report stated: “The Tottenham Hotspur head coach has been tracked by the Football Association for years.

“FA technical director John McDermott has followed Postecoglou’s career closely from Australia to Japan to Scotland and now into the Premier League and is an admirer of his work.”

In addition, it was claimed that Postecoglou would ‘fit the criteria being set out by the FA for the new England manager with the organisation determined to cast its net far and wide to find the right candidate’.

Aside from the above-mentioned names, Lee Carsley, who is currently the manager of England’s U21 team, has also been linked.
