Gareth Southgate 'axes two massive players from England's Euro 2024 squad' to leave fans completely stunned

Gareth Southgate is reportedly set to leave Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire out of his final squad for Euro 2024.

Both Maguire and Grealish have featured regularly under Southgate throughout his time as manager and were key members of the side that reached the final of Euro 2020, where they lost to Italy on penalties at Wembley.

But they are set to play no part in this summer's tournament in Germany.

The Athletic claim Manchester City winger Grealish and Manchester United defender Maguire will both be left out when Southgate names his final squad for the Euros.

Grealish, 28, struggled for form last season at Premier League champions City, scoring just three goals across 36 appearances in all competitions.

Maguire experienced a mixed campaign, which included being dropped by manager Erik ten Hag before fighting his way back into the team, and has not played since April due to a calf injury.

The 31-year-old had been training away from the rest of the England squad on an individual programme in the hope of making the tournament.

But it has too soon for the defender, who is now set to be cut from the squad.

Maguire and Grealish are set to join James Maddison, Curtis Jones, James Trafford and Jarell Quansah in missing out on the Euros, with Jarrad Branthwaite also expected to be axed from the 33-man preliminary squad.

Maddison was the first player to react to being dropped from the squad on Thursday, posting on Instagram: "Devastated doesn't quite cut it. Trained well and worked hard all week but if I'm honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn't at the levels I had set which gave Gareth a decision to make.

"I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26 man squad as I feel I bring something different & had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany but the manager has made the decision and I have to respect that.

"I'll be back, I have no doubt. Wishing the boys all the luck in the world out in Germany, unbelievable group and lads that I literally call some of my best friends. I genuinely hope football comes home."

Southgate is expected officially confirm his final 26-man squad for Germany at a press conference on Thursday evening.

England face Iceland in their final warm-up match on Friday night.

The Three Lions take on Serbia in their opening game on June 16 before further group games against Denmark (June 20) and Slovenia (June 25).
