England were brought back to earth with a bump at the World Cup after being held to a disappointing goalless draw against the United States.

Hopes were high heading into the match after the Three Lions thrashed Iran 6-2 in their opening game on Monday.

But Gareth Southgate’s side were unable to replicate a similar result against determined opponents, who dominated the first half and were unlucky to come away with just a point.

The draw means England will head into Tuesday's match against Wales needing to avoid a defeat to guarantee their place in the last 16 of the competition.

Here we rate England's players after a forgettable World Cup performance from the Three Lions.

England player ratings vs USA

Jordan Pickford – 6

Made a decent save from Christian Pulisic in the first half and had very little to do in the second half. Made no major mistakes.

Kieran Trippier - 5

Occasionally sloppy in possession and struggled going forwards. Hard to see how he's keeping Trent Alexander-Arnold out of the team on this form.

John Stones - 6

Solid defensively but cautious in possession. Too many sideways passes to Maguire.

Harry Maguire - 7

England's best player on the night, which isn't saying much. Made a series of crucial clearances when United States were on top. The only real positive for Southgate.

Luke Shaw – 6

Gave possession away on a number of occasions but provided more of a threat going forward than Trippier. Set up a good chance in the first half but needed to do more.

Declan Rice - 5

A sloppy performance from the West Ham man. Looked tired and lost the midfield battle.

Jude Bellingham – 6

Failed to hit the heights of the Iran game. Tried to inject energy into England's midfield, surprisingly taken off around the hour mark.

Mason Mount – 4

Very poor performance from the Chelsea midfielder. Phil Foden must be wondering what he has to do to start for England.

Raheem Sterling – 5

A few bright moments but was disappointing overall. England looked more dangerous in the second half after he had gone off.

Bukayo Saka - 5

Nowhere near what he is capable of. Misplaced a number of passes and struggled to provide a threat. Disappointing.

Harry Kane – 5

Looked leggy throughout the match, possibly because he is not yet fully fit. Could have scored in the first half but his effort was blocked, while a late header flashed over the bar. England need him to rediscover his goalscoring form if they are to have a chance of going far in the tournament.

Substitutes

Grealish - 7

Made an impact after coming on, winning free kicks further up the pitch. Should have been given more minutes.

Henderson – 6

England looked better in midfield with Henderson's experience, although he struggled to make a major impact.

Rashford - 6

Injected some pace after coming on with 10 minutes to go but did not have time to get properly into the game.
