UEFA have made huge transfer rule change thanks to Todd Boehly and Chelsea

Chelsea have been splashing the cash since Todd Boehly took over

UEFA have made a big change to their transfer regulations after the recent big money deals.

Over the last few transfer windows, many big clubs around the world have been spending big on new players.

One example is Chelsea, who have spent over £500 million in the last two windows on players like Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk and Marc Cucurella.

In order to comply with Financial Fair Play, Chelsea have given their big-money stars long contracts to spread out the cost of the transfer.

For example, Mudryk’s £62 million fee will be spread out over his huge eight-and-a-half-year contract. Whilst Fernandez’s £105 million will also be spread across the same length.

Apart from Chelsea, Liverpool have also done the same after signing Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo on long contracts to spread out the cost.

However, clubs will no longer be able to do that after it was reported that UEFA have decided clubs will only be allowed to pay off transfer fees over a five-year period, instead of over the length of a player’s deal.

The change is set to take place on 1 July, which is the official opening date of the summer transfer window.

As per The Mirror, a statement from UEFA said: “The amortisation of the player’s registration will be limited to five years in order to ensure equal treatment of all clubs and improve financial sustainability.

“In case of contract extension, the amortisation can be spread over the extended contract period but up to a maximum of five years from the date of the extension. Such a change will not restrict the way in which clubs operate (i.e. clubs that are allowed by their national governing bodies to conclude player contracts for a period exceeding five years can continue to do so) and will not apply retroactively to transfer operations that have already taken place.”

After their recent transfer spree, Chelsea have started to offload a number of their first-team stars.

The likes of Kai Havertz, Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly and N’Golo Kante have all left the club whilst Mason Mount is closing in on a transfer to Manchester United.
