BREAKING: Manchester United confirm Mason Mount signing

BREAKING: Manchester United confirm Mason Mount signing

Mount is Erik ten Hag's first signing of the summer despite a striker and a goalkeeper seeming like more obvious priorities.

Manchester United have finally confirmed the signing of Mason Mount from Chelsea, in a deal worth up to £60 million with add ons.

The chase of Mount has been ongoing for a number of weeks with United even threatening to back out of the deal at one point when the Blues wanted too much money.

However in the end Erik ten Hag has got his top midfield target as he looks to bolster his side's chances of catching Manchester City at the top of the table.

One of the incentives for the £5 million adds ons includes United having to lift either the Premier League or Champions League with Mount in the squad.

The club said: "Mason Mount has joined Manchester United on a contract running until June 2028, with the option of a further year.

"The 24-year-old midfielder has made 279 club appearances, scoring 58 goals and contributing 53 assists. The Champions League winner was Chelsea’s Player of the Year for both the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

"He has 36 caps for England and played a key role in his country’s run to the European Championship final in 2021.

Mason Mount said: “It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career. Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies.

“Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here.

“I am hugely ambitious; I know how amazing it feels to win major trophies and what it takes to do it. I will be giving everything to experience that again at Manchester United.”

United do not have unlimited spending power in the transfer market this summer and also require additions upfront and in goal.

David de Gea has left the club after his contract expired but could still return to Old Trafford, especially with Saudi Arabia his only current alternative option.

They have been heavily linked with Andre Onana although the Mount deal means they may struggle to afford the Inter Milan number one.

Upfront the club have already pulled their interest in Harry Kane due to the amount the Tottenham Hotspur striker would cost, leaving only Bayern Munich as a potential destination this summer.
