Arsenal could repeat Manchester City’s transfer mistake by selling a player to a major rival.

The Gunners are currently at the Premier League summit, two points clear of their nearest challengers City with a game in hand.

Their position has surprised many this term. Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League last season, some 24 points behind champions City, while going into the current campaign Mikel Arteta's squad was very much considered a work in progress.

Even the most optimistic Arsenal fans would not have expected their side to be leading the pack in February.

However, the continued improvement of last season’s talismans, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, coupled with some shrewd summer business has meant the Gunners are on track to win their first league title in 19 years.

In particular, the signing of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, both from City, has helped turn Arsenal into title challengers.

However, Arteta’s side are at risk of repeating City’s mistake, should they sell left-back Kieran Tierney to Newcastle United as is being reported.

Tierney to Newcastle

Arteta admitted he is “not thinking” about speculation linking Tierney to Newcastle.

The Scotland international has fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal, having made just four Premier League starts this term following the arrival of Zinchenko.

Indeed, even transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has admitted the 25-year-old could move this summer.

Tierney, who was a £25million signing from Celtic in 2019, is allegedly of interest to Newcastle this summer, with the Magpies looking to build a squad that can challenge at the top of the table.

Speaking on Tierney’s future, Arteta said: “I don’t know, I’m not thinking about that.

“I’m thinking about the best for the team, and obviously earn the players with the right to play minutes, which they all deserve, and we’re going to try to do that in the next couple of games.”
