Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro or Sergio Busquets, Xavi and Andres Iniesta? The argument over which midfield trio is better has resumed once again after Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph.

Madrid clinched their 14th European crown after beating Liverpool 1-0 at the Stade de France on Saturday. A goal from Vinicius Junior and a man of the match performance from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was enough to see off Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.

This also gave Madrid’s evergreen midfield trio of Modric, Kroos and Casemiro their fifth Champions League title, there are no doubts that the trio will go down as one of the best midfield combination in history, but Madrid fans think they are the best there has ever been.

Even better than Barcelona’s Spanish trio of Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta, who were part of Pep Guardiola’s spectacular Barcelona side that has been labelled as ‘the best team the world has ever seen.’

Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta’s advantage was that they all played for the same national team, they were instrumental in Spain’s back to back Euro triumphs and the World Cup win in 2010.

Many people expected the duo of Modric and Kroos to be phased out after the arrival of Eduardo Camavinga and the continued growth shown by Federico Valverde, but Modric and Kroos continued to showed the world that they are not done yet.

The experienced duo played a key role in Madrid's run to Champions League glory, often controlling and dictating games from the centre of the park. Modric produced one of the finest assist you will ever see for Rodrygo’s goal in the quarter final clash against Chelsea.

Madrid and Barcelona fans took to twitter to give their arguments, counting both midfield trios achievements as a point of argument.

One fan said: "Despite the age and decline they showed it in UCL that they are in a different league, far ahead of Xavi Iniesta and Busquets. This debate should be put to rest for good!"

Another fan backed the former Barcelona trio and said: "Dude, Xavi, Iniesta, and Busquets won champions leagues by suffocating their rivals in their own area, and don’t let them even touch the ball. Kroos, Modric and Casemiro won a champions league yesterday with 1 shot on target."

The Twitter war between the two fan base will no doubt continue for a long time, but the fact is, both trios are exceptional in their own way.
