Sergio Aguero snubbed Liverpool when naming the two teams that would challenge Manchester City for next season’s Premier League title.

When in full flow Pep Guardiola’s side appear far and away the best side in the Premier League.

Indeed, City claimed their third league title in succession, and their fifth in six years, while they are set to play Manchester United in the FA Cup final and Inter in the Champions League final in the coming weeks.

At present it feels inevitable that City will challenge for the Premier League next term, however, their challengers are open for debate.

Indeed, Arsenal led the Premier League for 248 days of the 2022/23 season only to be pipped at the line by City. Given they are expecting a very busy summer transfer window, Mikel Arteta’s side may run City close once more.

However, the other challengers next season are difficult to predict.

Aguero on Premier League title race

Looking ahead to next season City legend Aguero claimed his old side would be a big candidate for the title again, and added that second-placed Arsenal and a resurgent Manchester United would be their biggest challengers.

The former striker, who won the Premier League on five occasions with City, notably did not include Liverpool in the mix for next season.

For years, the Reds were Liverpool’s closest challengers and even claimed a Premier League of their own back in 2020.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s side endured a dismal campaign this season, failing to win a trophy or qualify for the Champions League.

Aguero said in a column for Stake: "City will continue to be a candidate next season. It has been shown that it is the best team in the Premier League, with a very clear style of play, which has won three consecutive titles, something difficult to achieve.

"Why not think then that you can get another? Surely, as he does every season, Pep will continue to make the adjustments he deems necessary to remain competitive. But this is the Premier League and it is football, there will be several teams that try to dethrone them.

"I think that Arsenal has established a very important base of young players with a long way to go. Mikel Arteta will try to reinforce his lines and will be one of the rivals to beat next season.

"We must not forget about Manchester United either, who have returned to their competitive spirit and will be one of those who most want to defeat City."
