Fans have slammed The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) after seeing how much Carlos Sainz was fined following an incident at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Sainz, 30, has been issued a hefty fine due to a ‘ridiculous’ reason.

The Williams driver, who finished 14th in Japan, breached Article 19.4 b) of Formula 1’s sporting regulations when he was late for the national anthem ahead of the race.

The Spaniard was late due to a reported stomach upset, which was confirmed by medics.

Nonetheless, the FIA issued a statement confirming his exact punishment.

“During the Drivers’ Briefing on Friday all drivers were reminded of the requirement to be in position by the time prescribed in the regulations and the need to show respect for the host country’s Anthem,” the stewards' report read.

“It is noted that the Penalty Guidelines prescribed in Appendix B of the FIA International Sporting Code, list a penalty for this offence, of €60,000.

“However in mitigation, the Driver stated that just prior to the Anthem, he experienced discomfort due a stomach issue which delayed his appearance on the grid.

“This was verified by Dr Messina of Med-Ex who confirmed the issue and stated he had provided appropriate medication for the Driver.

“Notwithstanding the above, displaying respect for the National Anthem is a high priority and all parties need to consider every eventuality in planning to be in position for the Anthem by the required time.

“Hence a penalty similar to that imposed for a similar breach in Canada in 2024, is imposed.”

So, due to the mitigating factors, Sainz has been issued a €20,000 fine, with €10,000 suspended for a 12-month period.

And fans were quick to give their thoughts on social media.

One said: "It's getting ridiculous now. All they want is money no matter what. A doctor literally confirmed he wasn't well and they're saying he disrespected the national anthem? This a whole new low."

Another added: "So a medical issue prevented him arriving on time, you still fine him? FIA are a joke!"

While a third exclaimed: "FIA is getting more ridiculous by the day! Taking money from drivers for little mistakes."
