Darting legend Phil Taylor once hit a rare 240 shot that most players haven't been able to replicate.

On Thursday, the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship will resume at the Alexandra Palace in London.

Defending champion and heavy favourite Luke Litltler will take on Krzysztof Ratajski in the evening session. Luke Humphries will also be facing Gian van Veen.

In the afternoon session, Ryan Searle and Jonny Clayton will kick off the action, followed by Gary Anderson's match against this year's surprise star, Justin Hood.

Although the aforementioned names are currently the eight best darts players in the world, they still haven't managed to achieve something Taylor accomplished back in 1993.

'The Power' will forever be regarded as one of the greatest of all time, having won the world title on 16 occasions.

Taylor also has the most televised nine-dart finishes with 11 and is the first player to produce two nine-darters in the same match.

Back in 1993, during a tie against Jocky Wilson at the UK Matchplay, Taylor managed a maximum score of 240 from three darts.

The maximum score of 240 was made possible because, at the time, games were being played on a 'Quadro' board, which had been brought in by Harrows Darts Technology in the previous year.

The board had an extra ring between the trebles and the outer bull, which meant you could get quadruples as well as trebles.

The highest possible checkout was 210 from two quadruple 20 and then the bull, but Taylor went and achieved the maximum score of 240 by hitting quadruple 20 three times.

At the time, Taylor's effort is believed to be the second 240 hit captured on camera, with Wilson, Shayne Burgess, Bob Anderson and Peter Evison also later matching the achievement during the event.

However, the board in question was discontinued in 2000 after it was claimed that darts players were regularly confused by the fact that there were so many combinations that were tough to remember.
