Revealed: The feeling within Manchester City on Erling Haaland's release clause

Since his arrival in English football, Erling Haaland has been the main topic of conversation.

The Norwegian’s switch to Manchester City has been seen as one of the rare occasions in which a global superstar has decided to make his biggest career move to a Premier League club.

Expectations have been met by the all-conquering striker’s displays, as he currently has a staggering 15 goals in just nine league games.

With three goals for Manchester City in the Champions League as well, Erling Haaland has outscored every player in the top five leagues in Europe.

While the 22-year old’s stupendous displays have been a constant talking point, the youngster’s future at the Etihad Stadium has been discussed at equal length, albeit being very early into his time at the club.

Several credible reports have revealed that a €200 million release clause is embedded in the Leeds-born goalscorer’s contract, which can be triggered by non-Premier League teams from 2024.

It has also been claimed that the value of said clause will decrease year upon year, until his current contract with the Sky Blues expires in 2027.

Keeping that in mind, a number of Manchester City fans themselves are resigned to the fate that the former Borussia Dortmund superstar could join one of the European elite in a couple of years’ time.

However, a new suggestion has explained why Pep Guardiola’s side are not worried about their star striker’s chances of departing the club anytime soon.

As per a report by Graeme Bailey, sources within Manchester City are at ease about Erling Haaland’s future, as the club’s policy remains that they would never stop a player from leaving.

It has also been stated that by the time the release clause kicks in, the in-form number nine’s weekly wages will increase to a whopping £500,000, due to the incremental wage increases bedded into his current deal.

As a result, Haaland could end up becoming the highest-paid player in the Premier League, if not right alongside teammate Kevin De Bruyne.

Considering the cases of Leroy Sane, Ferran Torres, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko in recent memory, Manchester City always have a plan in place, even if a player of Erling Haaland’s stature decides to bid farewell to the club.

This weekend, another challenge looms for the Norway international and his Manchester City teammates.

The reigning Premier League champions will look to maintain their unbeaten start to the new campaign at Anfield.

Pep Guardiola's side travel to face Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, with City having had a marginally greater amount of rest period between their Champions League duties in midweek and the weekend's clash.
