Manchester City have been mentioned as a potential suitor in the race to sign highly-rated Benfica and Argentina midfielder, Enzo Fernandez, according to reports.

The 21 year-old has impressed for Benfica across the course of the Champions League group stages this season, following a €12 million move from River Plate in the most recent summer transfer window.

A recent suggestion claimed that Liverpool were interested in the Argentine midfielder, and will be watching him at the upcoming World Cup.

After only a few months in Europe, he is already attracting the very elite across the continent.

Enzo Fernandez has played a huge role in Benfica’s unbeaten season so far, as they finished top of their Champions League group and look on track to win the Primeira Liga for the first time since 2019.

The Portuguese giants know full well about the interest that Fernandez is drawing, and are already preparing to sell the midfielder at the end of the season.

This is according to a report from Portuguese newspaper Record, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness.

It is suggested that other clubs are already planning on making a move for the rising midfielder, with Manchester City and Manchester United among the most notable.

With the aforementioned clubs planning a move, it is no wonder why Benfica are bracing themselves to sell the player, especially given the price tag that he could garner in the coming months.

It also means that clubs like Manchester City may have a battle on their hands to sign the talented midfielder, if they are to pursue further interest.

Portuguese newspaper Record report that all clubs have sent scouts to watch Fernandez in action this season.

His form so far this season was rewarded with a place in Argentina’s 26-man World Cup squad, and Fernandez is expected to play a part for his country as one of the tournament's favourites over in Qatar.

All three English clubs are looking at strengthening their midfield areas, with clubs such as Liverpool looking for successors for players such as Jordan Henderson.

Manchester City will also be thinking about strengthening in the position, with transfer rumours surrounding players including Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva.

Still only 21-years-old, Enzo Fernandez would be an excellent long-term solution at Manchester City, with manager Pep Guardiola one of the best in the world at nurturing young players.

It is highlighted that Enzo Fernandez is now valued at €35 million by Transfermarkt, but is protected at Benfica by a staggering €120 million release clause.
