Chelsea could be set to make signing a new winger a priority in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Blues signed six new players for the senior side during the summer, and were the highest spenders out of all the teams in the Premier League.

Raheem Sterling was their first arrival, joining Chelsea from rivals Manchester City, with Kalidou Koulibaly being the second after he made the switch from Napoli.

Marc Cucurella arrived at Stamford Bridge from Brighton, and Wesley Fofana put pen to paper on a deal at Stamford Bridge after two seasons at Leicester City.

On Deadline Day, the Blues completed their business with the signings of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona and Denis Zakaria on loan from Juventus.

Whilst many acquisitions were made there were also departures from the west London side, with the likes of Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi both leaving permanently and on loan respectively.

As a result, Chelsea have just three wingers at their disposal, with Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic both staying despite being linked with moves away.

Even though the window is now shut until the beginning of the new year, the Blues may be ready to prepare for the reopening of the market in order to further strengthen their squad.

As per Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea may look to sign a new winger in the January transfer window.

Once the club has hired a sporting director, this is the position that he believes the Blues will be looking to target.

Werner was the only permanent departure in that area of the pitch for the west London side, with the club having the opportunity to recall Hudson-Odoi from his loan at Bayer Leverkusen.

However, they may opt to sign someone else when the window reopens.

Whilst a new winger could certainly arrive at Chelsea in the coming months, other reports have suggested that another position could be their key focus.

On Deadline Day, Graham Potter’s side were linked with a transfer for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez.

Despite their efforts, they were unable to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

However, there is a belief that they could make his signing a priority in the transfer window as they look to add another option to the midfield positions.

Jorginho and N’Golo Kante will leave the club next summer should they not extend their deals at the club, and therefore a new midfielder is likely to come in.

Chelsea are also keen on Brighton man Moises Caicedo, who previously played under Potter on the south coast.
