Chelsea are prioritising a move for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez in January despite Graham Potter monitoring Brighton's Moises Caicedo, according to reports.

The Blues attempted to sign Alvarez towards the end of the summer transfer window but were unable to conclude a deal for the Mexico star.

Instead, Chelsea opted to bring in Denis Zakaria on a season-long loan from Juventus.

The Swiss international is yet to feature since his arrival at Stamford Bridge but will be hoping to impress and earn a permanent move at the end of the season.

Despite this, Chelsea appear to still be in the market for further midfield reinforcements in January.

N'Golo Kante has struggled with injury in recent years, while he and Jorginho both see their contracts expire in 2023.

Therefore, Potter may look to rebuild his midfield ahead of next season.

The Blues remain interested in Jude Bellingham but will no doubt face fierce competition for the England international when he leaves Borussia Dortmund.

It has now been reported that there are two potential incomings in the midfield department.

As stated by Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are 'keeping tabs' on the situation of Brighton midfielder Caicedo.

This comes after the Blues brought Marc Cucurella and Potter in from the Seagulls, showing that they have a strong relationship with the Premier League side.

His contract runs until 2025 and he shares a strong relationship with Potter, who brought him to the south coast club.

He has previously admitted: "Nobody would turn down an offer from Chelsea or any other club like that.

"It’d be a dream to be in the best teams in the world."

Therefore, Chelsea may have a slight advantage in negotiations, while Potter's pull power could help.

Furthermore, Jacobs continues to reveal that despite monitoring Caicedo, the Blues have a different priority.

Alvarez is seen as the current midfield priority for future windows.

However, the arrival of Potter could see this change while his recruitment specialist Kyle Macaulay may also help change the priority.

It remains to be seen as to whether Caicedo or Alvarez will end up playing at Stamford Bridge, but it looks like Chelsea are still looking for further additions to their midfield.
