John Cena once cost WWE co-founder Vince McMahon a cool $500,000 after an untelevised bout in New York City went beyond a curfew and triggered a penalty.

Cena is poised to retire from wrestling at the end of this year and is currently taking part in a retirement tour.

The 48-year-old has been in the ring since 1999, with much of his career spent with the WWE.

In that time, Cena has won the WWE Championship 14 times and has also been the World Heavyweight Champion on three occasions, as well as claiming the WWE United States Championship on five separate occasions.

During his time in the WWE, Cena has faced countless opponents and one of them was Nemeth, also known as Dolph Ziggler, with the duo facing off six times between 2010 and 2015 in singles matches.

One of these matches took place at Madison Square Garden in New York in December 2012 and was a Steel Cage Match.

Nemeth recently took part in an interview with KVIA ABC-7 and the wrestler, who is now signed to Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, outlined how their bout cost WWE co-founder McMahon up to $500,000 after the untelevised encounter went beyond a strict curfew, but one that he was ultimately happy to pay to give fans what they wanted to see.

45-year-old Nemeth, who won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship twice, said: "One of my absolute favourite matches I ever had with him was at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in a Steel Cage, not televised, and here's the best part.

"There is a curfew with MSG and if you don't hit that curfew, the building becomes a half of a million dollars more.

"We're down to the main event with the steel cage and there’s eight minutes until — after this, it's a half of a million dollars on Vince's tab.

"I'm like, 'What are we doing, we can't shortchange these guys?' He went, 'Absolutely not, we’re going and we're talking to the boss'.

"Talked to the boss, boss goes, 'Give them their money's worth.' We went out there for 30 minutes."
