WWE is holding their first major UK stadium event since SummerSlam 92 at Wembley Stadium

It will be a throwback to the time that Bret Hart took on the British Bulldog in front of a raucous crowd at the original Wembley Stadium.

WWE is returning to the United Kingdom for their first major stadium show since SummerSlam 1992 at Wembley Stadium.

It’s been 30 years since the biggest wrestling company in the world put on a huge-capacity show across the pond - with the upcoming Clash At The Castle event less than two weeks away.

Held at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff in front of an estimated 65,000-plus capacity, the event has an incredibly European flavour to the billing.

Fan favourite and former WWE champion Drew McIntyre will be representing Scotland in the main event against Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

While he might be a fair bit south of his home country, expect the crowd to be firmly behind McIntrye just as the Wembley crowd was behind the British Bulldog against Bret Hart back at SummerSlam 92.

Elsewhere on the card, the Irishman Sheamus takes on the Austrian Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship in what will be a hard-hitting bout.

Whilst Irish legend Becky Lynch will be featuring in a six-woman tag match alongside Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky as they take on Bianca Belair, Alexa Bliss, and Asuka.Ā

It’ll be the WWE’s first UK PPV since the 2003 Insurrextion show, and will surely be a huge callback to the iconic SummerSlam event held at the original Wembley Stadium.

That event was the first major pay-per-view to be held outside of North America, and what a show it was.

It featured some of the all-time greats in WWE including Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels taking on Rick Martel, whilst The Undertaker quickly dispatched of the big-man Kamala.

For the WWE Championship, the UK crowd were treated to a matchup between two of the biggest crowd favourites in Randy Savage and Ultimate Warrior.

That bout featured the likes of My Perfect and Ric Flair running in and joining in on the fun only to be taken care of by both Savage and Warrior who embraced after their matchup.Ā

Of course, the event was headlined by perhaps the greatest SummerSlam main event of all time when hometown favourite British Bulldog took on Bret Hart for the Intercontinental Championship.

It’s safe to say not many wrestlers since have managed to have as much of a groundswell of support as the Bulldog had on that occasion.

Bulldog entered with Commonwealth Heavyweight boxing Champion and London native Lennox Lewis by his side and if there was a roof on Wembley Stadium it surely would’ve come off.

It was a technical masterpiece that ended as Davey Boy Smith counted Bret Hart’s sunset flip and pinned the champion to win the Intercontinental Championship - a moment that has been called the greatest in SummerSlam history.

As the WWE heads to Wales for Clash At The Castle on September 3, the memories of SummerSlam 92 will be at the forefront for many in attendance.
