Manchester United 1999 Champions League Hero Has Given His Thoughts On The Club’s Current Transfer Activity

Manchester United 1999 Champions League Hero Has Given His Thoughts On The Club’s Current Transfer Activity

Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has outlined his opinions on the club’s current lack of transfers into Erik ten Hag’s squad.

With Manchester United off to a slow start in the transfer window, many other rival clubs have strengthened their teams.

With the likes of Manchester City signing Haaland, Liverpool signing Darwin Nunez, Tottenham signing both Bissouma and Perisic and Arsenal recently signing Fabio Vieira, some fans are becoming restless with the club’s lack of transfer activity.

As the Red Devils are yet to add new faces at the Theatre of Dreams, it has left Manchester United fans in an uproar pointing the fingers at the recruitment at Manchester United.

With the mass exodus taking place from the board room to pitch, the outgoings taking place at Manchester United would expect the club to bring in plenty of fresh faces with the addition of a fresh recruitment strategy.

Nevertheless, in an exclusive interview with Lord Ping Blog, Manchester United great Teddy Sheringham provides an insight into the recruitment aspect at Manchester United.

In the interview, the question asked to Teddy Sheringham was if he thinks his former club still has the pulling power to attract the biggest names in the game.

The question had been asked in relation to Frenkie De Jong, a high-profile player being reported as the number one priority at United.

Sheringham responded to this question by outlining the significant history of Manchester United. “When Manchester United come calling, there’s not too many players turning them down.”

Although Sheringham acknowledges that Manchester United are ‘going the wrong way at the moment’, he also highlights the culture of the Red Devils, quoted as saying “some players may need convincing, but once a player gets to Manchester United, and he starts travelling around the world with them, he’ll understand how big United are.”

In relation to recruitment, Teddy Sheringham was also asked what area he thinks the club needs reinforcement in this coming summer. Sheringham reiterated that Manchester United need reinforcements all over the pitch with the main necessities being central midfield, centre forward and wingers.

The United great continued by adding, “we’re looking at five or six top players needing to come in.” Sheringham not only specifies on the level of player needed, but also goes on to add that they need to have the right character, as well as appreciate the task of getting Manchester United back to the top.

In the blog, Sheringham acknowledges the massive job needed to re-build United and shows a level of understanding to a player if they were able to choose Premier league rival Manchester City as opposed to Manchester United. Sheringham goes on to explain “top players would love to slot in alongside De Bruyne or any of the world class players City have.”

Teddy Sheringham highlights the disappointing season at Manchester United, and understands that the rebuilding process will take time. Although there may be numerous transfer windows to build the Manchester United squad in Erik Ten Hag’s favour, Sheringham goes on to add “If Ten Hag goes in there and turns things around, everything can change quickly.”

Manchester United are due to start their pre-season tour against Liverpool on 12 July. The tour will see them start in Bangkok before jetting off to Australia to play Melbourne Victory, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, before heading back to Europe to face off against Atletico Madrid in Oslo.

Erik ten Hag will have his unofficial bow at Old Trafford against Rayo Vallecano on 31 July, before the Premier League season commences the following weekend, where Manchester United will face Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the season.
