Former Manchester United goalkeeper, Sergio Romero, has expressed his interest in a return to Old Trafford as a back-up to current first choice, David de Gea.

Richard Fay of the Manchester Evening News, has reported that Romero is interested in returning to Manchester United, having only left the club a year ago.

While there is yet to be formal contact between Manchester United and Romero about a return for the Argentine however, United are in need of a back up keeper, and Romero would be open to a back-up role.

Dean Henderson is set to have his medical this week ahead of a loan move to Nottingham Forest.

A source close to Romero admitted that he still has a lot of love for United and that "he would always come back" if an offer was made.

There is the current backup option of Tom Heaton, but Romero offers perhaps a slight step-up in quality that United will be desiring.

Romero spent last season at Venezia in Serie A, following his departure from Old Trafford, with the Argentine making 16 appearances in the league as his side were relegated. He is now a free agent after this spell.

While the keeper was not able to save the Italian side from relegation, semi-regular playing time last season will have kept Romero on top of his game, making him the perfect back up keeper to David de Gea.

A combination of fitness and experience would allow Romero to be an effective squad player next season, as United compete in four different competitions; the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup and the Europa League.

The goalkeeper made 61 appearances for United during his nearly six year stint at the club, winning the League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League in this time.

Bringing a player back to the club that has won an assortment of silverware at Old Trafford previously could prove to be effective, should Romero help to install a winning mentality in the dressing room.

Such a mentality is crucial if United aim to push for both domestic and European silverware in Erik ten Hag’s debut season.

The return of Romero could follow the completion of transfers for Frenkie de Jong and Tyrell Malacia, with officials at the club likely to be focused on these two deals, before entertaining the prospect of bringing the former keeper back to the club.

It is thought that De Jong could be announced on the weekend, with it being thought that only formalities are left to be completed in the deal with Barcelona.

Similarly, it is thought that a deal to secure Malacia will be concluded swiftly, with the player stating that his preference is to join Manchester United over Lyon in France.

Erik ten Hag will be hoping that deals to bring in De Jong, Malacia and now potentially Romero will be concluded before the squad fly out on their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

New blood in the squad will be important to turn around the fortunes of the squad after a poor 21/22 season, despite Erik ten Hag giving current players a ‘clean slate’.

However, the return of an experienced former United player in Romero, who has a history of winning silverware with the club, could also prove to be extremely valuable ahead of the new season.
