Controversial UFC star Sean Strickland issues statement after serious crash as condition confirmed
UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland has issued a statement after confirming he was involved in a high-speed car crash in Las Vegas.
Strickland, 35, took to social media on Tuesday (September 22) and described how he was involved in a crash while travelling as a passenger in an off-road vehicle without wearing a helmet.
The American explained that his close friend Chris Cornell fell unconscious and was subsequently taken to hospital for an X-ray of a broken bone.
In video footage posted to his Instagram account, Strickland showed grazes on his back and head.

“Guys, I'm in a real bad place,” Strickland said.
“I let my buddy [Chris Cornell] drive, he rolled, we were going like 60mph, we rolled like six times.”

After explaining how the cut on his head was the result of him ‘smacking the ground’ at 60 miles per hour, he added: “I didn’t have a helmet on. I'm an idiot. That was just from rolling and smacking the dirt.
“I'm just gonna lay here and take a nap for a little bit. Sleep it off.”
Strickland continued by explaining that the incident wasn’t his fault and that his shoulder was ‘a little sore’ while describing feelings of ‘concussion setting in’.
“I hit the ground like six times, [but] I'm good, bro, I'm sparring tomorrow. I'm a little concussed.
“I was not driving. I was not in control of the vehicle. When we rolled, It wasn’t my fault.”
The UFC star then showed a photograph of Cornell, who appeared to be nursing a broken collarbone.
“Let me tell you about the worst thing about this,” he finished.
“Tomorrow, when I walk into the [UFC Performance Institute] after sparring, I ask them to work on my shoulder, and I tell them what happened...
“They're gonna look at me with utter disappointment, and I gotta explain to them that I wasn't driving and it wasn’t my fault.”

It is unclear whether the incident will delay Strickland’s return to the octagon, having last fought in May when he reclaimed the UFC middleweight championship by defeating Khamzat Chimaev. After the bout, Strickland confirmed that he needed time to recover from injuries to his shoulder.
