UFC superstar Conor McGregor surprisingly praised US President Donald Trump on Twitter and called him the 'GOAT of the USA.'

The 31-year-old Irishman made his sensational return to MMA last Saturday and swiftly dispatched Donald Cerrone only 40 seconds into their UFC 246 showdown.

But McGregor has stunned fans after he took to Twitter and branded the polarising Trump a "Phenomenal President."

Trump, who is subject to impeachment charges in the US, was celebrating his three-year anniversary in the White House and Martin Luther King Jr Day on social media.

The 73-year-old US President tweeted: "It was exactly three years ago today, January 20, 2017, that I was sworn into office.

"So appropriate that today is also MLK jr DAY. African-American Unemployment is the LOWEST in the history of our Country, by far.

"Also, best Poverty, Youth, and Employment numbers, ever. Great!"

McGregor congratulated Trump and wished US natives a 'happy Martin Luther King Jr Day' in his message.

The 'Notorious' tweeted: "Phenomenal President. Quite possibly the USA [GOAT].

"Most certainly one of them anyway, as he sits atop the shoulders of many amazing giants that came before him.

"No easy feet. Early stages of term also. Incredible. Congrats and Happy Martin Luther King Jr. day America."

Trump has now responded to the Irish superstar and congratulated him on his UFC win last weekend.

He said: "Congratulations on your big @UFC WIN!"

McGregor was optimistic about Trump in 2016 after he caused a stunning upset against Hillary Clinton in the US presidential election.

"I'm not from around here, [but] maybe Donald won't be so bad," he told CNN.

"I don't really feel anything changes -- essentially it's just like a fight.

"Someone wins, someone loses, and then you wake up and everyone's day carries on [...] I wish him well, [let's] see what he does."
