Ilia Topuria's coach gives shocking health update after Justin Gaethje beatdown

Topuria quit on his stool between rounds four and five against Gaethje and, in doing so, surrendered his lightweight title.

A member of Ilia Topuria’s coaching team has issued an update on the fighter’s health following his UFC Freedom 250 defeat to Justin Gaethje.

Topuria entered the White House card as the UFC lightweight champion, boasting an unbeaten record of 17-0.

However, Gaethje, who came into the contest as the underdog, proved too much for his Spanish-Georgian opponent.

After a brutal beating, Topuria did not rise from his stool between rounds four and five, crowning Gaethje the undisputed lightweight champion.

Topuria’s face was heavily bloodied and bruised, with reports initially suggesting he had suffered broken orbital bones. However, it was later confirmed that he had sustained non-displaced fractures.

In a statement released in the days after the fight, Topuria congratulated his opponent on the victory while claiming he lost vision in both eyes during the contest.

"You said you’d leave your mark on my face… and you did," Topuria wrote on social media.

"You took the sight from my right eye in the first round, and by the end of the second, from my left too.

"No excuses. I had one of the best camps of my life.

"I came in sharp, prepared, and ready. Last night was your night.

"That’s the nature of this game. Glory and pain walk side by side.

"I’ll heal. I’ll rest. And I’ll return stronger, wiser, and far more dangerous.

"And trust me… this story between us is far from over. We will have our rematch."

Gaethje has made it clear that he does not want a rematch, despite Topuria’s statement.

Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience, when asked whether Topuria will get a rematch once he recovers, Gaethje said: "No, he doesn't get a rematch.

"He can try, but he doesn't get one. He quit on the stool. He quit twice, I stopped him twice. What else do I have to f****** do?"

Ilia Topuria health update issued

The 29-year-old’s strength and conditioning coach, Jesus Gallo, issued an update on Topuria’s health during an interview with Serebro En los Deportes on June 25.

“Day by day, he already looks like a completely different person,” Gallo explained.

“He looks like he wasn’t even in a fight, honestly.

“All the swelling in his face has gone down, every type of bruising he had.

“What the doctor told us was that within six to eight weeks, it should heal properly, especially because there was no displaced fracture.

“After that, for him to start wrestling again and doing things again, it’ll take a little while for it to really solidify.

“I think we’re talking about at least two to three months, easily.

“If you saw us in a rematch or another fight, it would be towards the end of the year, in December. Who knows? We’ll see.”
