Ilia Topuria looked completely unrecognisable at the end of his battle with Justin Gaethje at UFC’s controversial event at the White House, with pictures emerging of his blood-soaked face.
It was an evening to remember for UFC veteran Gaethje, who pulled off one of the greatest upsets in MMA history after defeating odds-on favourite Topuria by technical knockout.
As usual, Gaethje's deadly right hand caused some serious damage throughout and, after four rounds of non-stop action, the American forced Topuria to retire on his stool to become the new lightweight champ.
It came as no surprise when a member of El Matador's team informed officials to stop the fight ahead of the final five minutes.

After absorbing a significant amount of punishment in the third round, Topuria looked as though he would retire on his stool but somehow, the Spaniard carried on, despite concerns from the doctor.

Topuria's face was bloodied and bruised in the aftermath of Sunday's historic seven-fight card in Washington DC, with before-and-after pictures emerging online that show the extent of his injuries, as seen below.
Joe Rogan described the main event as “one of the greatest fights in the history of the sport”, while former UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier said it was "like a movie".

Speaking in his post-fight interview with Rogan, 'The Highlight' gave an insight into the build-up to Sunday's event, as well as what happened in the octagon.
“I told myself I was going to lose, I told myself I was going to get embarrassed so that I can go to my most primal place and dig deep," he told Rogan. “And I had to. That guy had me in trouble, he rocked my chin and smoked my liver, but I stuck in.
"Look at my face, I’ve got some thick-a** face, something’s wrong with me."

He continued: “I knew I was going to have to get through the first round. His skills are unmatched when he’s fresh but my durability, tenacity and heart will carry me through those first couple of rounds. No one can outwork me in round three and especially the championship rounds."
“I have my mom’s Mexican warrior spirit," added Gaethje. "I’ve got my dad’s German thick bones. And I am made for these moments. This sport was made for me and I’ve shown you why. I’m the most consistent, most exciting guy that’s ever been in this cage.”
