Conor McGregor wants UFC 329 loss overturned and makes bizarre claim over the cause of his injury

Conor McGregor has doubled down on his request for his UFC comeback loss to be overturned after making a claim for why he suffered a devastating injury seconds into the fight.

McGregor returned the Octagon for the first time in five years to face off against Max Holloway for a second time but disaster struck in the UFC 329 main event.

A failed roundhouse kick straight from the off failed and saw McGregor fall to the mat on multiple occasions.

After just 69 seconds and without any contact between the two, the fight at the T-Mobile Arena was waved off.

The former two-weight UFC champion later confirmed that he had torn both his meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), likely putting him on the shelf for another lengthy period.

McGregor suffered the same injury in the first fight with Holloway, only on the other leg.

Holloway was awarded the victory via TKO knockout without breaking a sweat but McGregor took to social media to claim that "the fight should be a no contest and all bets returned".

A few weeks on and McGregor maintains that the result ought to be overturned. However, he also claimed that dry ice made the cage floor wet and that is what led to his subsequent injury.

On Instagram, McGregor wrote: “The white orange and green machine. mosying on back to the office, up the office! Sorry I’m late but the dry ice has the cage floor wet it’s a no contest now chop chop for the champ champ I’ll see ya’s next year 100%."

It is unlikely that UFC will adhere to McGregor's request, with no contests only typically administered in cases of failed drug tests or accidental fouls.

In a separate post McGregor said that he "may begin to distribute training footage" and added: "The amount of work I put in, without getting even a semblance of a fight back, is really disheartening. But is it? That work is still there. Now, I am being called upon for more work. More discipline. More growth. What is my problem then? None. I don't have one. Thank you, God."

Conor McGregor names date for UFC return

McGregor had previously said that he is hopeful of being back in the Octagon next summer for the final fight on his current UFC contract, telling fans that "with today’s regenerative medicine advancements and improved training methods it is well within my realm to return by next summer".

He also said he had began walking without a crutch and had even been on the leg extension exercise, sharing clips on his social media platforms.

In a newer post, McGregor stated that he is targeting a comeback for UFC’s International Fight Week in July 2027 as he wrote: “What was ⁠to be a generational beating is now to be reset. IFW 2027. The Last Dance.”

The Irishman has lost his last three fights and four out of his last five under the UFC umbrella. Asked about his situation on Sunday, UFC chief Dana White simply replied: “Conor McGregor’s out for a year.“
