Andy Murray snubs 'unbelievable' player when naming who he thinks is the best in the world right now

Andy Murray has offered his verdict on who he thinks is the best player in the world right now, and his opinion will surprise no one.

Based on recent form, world No. 2 Alexander Zverev can make a huge case. The German has won two Grand Slams in 2026, breaking his duck at the French Open in April before winning the US Open in a captivating final against Ben Shelton.

Zverev can even overtake the currently injured Jannik Sinner and rise to the top of the ATP rankings with a strong end to the year. The 24-year-old has endured a frustrating period through injury, forcing him to withdraw from multiple events. Still, he's widely regarded as the best player on the planet, though Murray thinks Carlos Alcaraz currently holds that accolade.

Andy Murray thinks Carlos Alcaraz is the best in the world right now

When asked why Alcaraz is the world's best player, the 2013 Wimbledon winner told TNT Sports: "I think you have to answer that when everyone's healthy," Murray told TNT Sports. "My opinion is that Alcaraz is the best player.

"But on any given day, those guys, we've seen them; Sinner's beaten Alcaraz multiple times as well. Zverev's won two Slams this year; he's had an unbelievable year.

"But I think that when everyone's fit and healthy, I would say that Alcaraz is the best player.

"We all have our biases, though. I just love watching him play. I think he's a great personality, great character, I love his game style, he can hit every single shot, he's got a smile on his face when he's playing, and I love watching Carlos, so I'm going to go with him."

Alcaraz began the year in unstoppable fashion by beating the legendary Novak Djokovic in February's Australian Open final to win his seventh Grand Slam title at the age of just 22.

The Spaniard then won the Qatar Open later that month before making two more finals, notably losing to Daniil Medvedev at Indian Wells in March and then falling to Sinner at the Monte Carlo Masters in April.

Later that month, his world came crashing down when he suffered a wrist injury at the Barcelona Open, which sidelined him for four months and saw him miss the Madrid Open, Italian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open.

The 23-year-old returned to action at the US Open and showcased his incredible talent before losing an epic five-set semi-final to Shelton, who was eventually beaten by Zverev in the final.

Alcaraz most recently helped Team Europe to a 13-5 success over Team World at the Laver Cup, producing a two-set-to-one victory over Taylor Fritz as Zverev closed out the tournament with a 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 win against Learner Tien.

In truth, Zverev struggled against rookie Tien, although he did have the insurance policy of teammate Alcaraz to step up next if required, but the two-time major winner secured victory to help Team Europe prevail.

Alcaraz was scheduled to face Australian De Minaur in a later singles match, but the German's victory over the 20-year-old ensured he didn't have to, and he was "happy" that Alcaraz didn't need to play another match.

"We had three chances to close ​it out in the singles," Zverev said. "Especially with Carlos playing after me, I think ​that gives me a lot of confidence and gives me a little bit of freedom to play.

"But still, ​it was an incredibly tough match. Credit to Learner as well.

"I think Carlos is also very happy that ⁠I closed it out. And me too, by the way! I'm very happy that I won."
