England secured a 2-1 victory over DR Congo in the round of 32 in the 2026 World Cup, and it appeared to capture the attention of everyone in the nation, that is, except for one individual from the international rugby team that was watching the match.

It was a historic win for the Three Lions as they managed to bring an end to an unwanted 60-year World Cup record.

A brace from Harry Kane in the final 15 minutes of the match was enough to overturn the one-goal deficit they faced at halftime after Brian Cipenga opened the scoring in the seventh minute for the African nation.

As the match progressed past the second half hydration break, it was evident to see the unease and nervousness within the England fanbase as the minutes moved closer to the final whistle, that is, until Kane popped up to ensure they progressed to the round of 16, where they will now face Mexico.

It was not just fans in the stadium feeling this way, as seen in the video shared by the England Rugby Instagram account, as the players within the squad watching the match were animated throughout as the Three Lions struggled to get past DR Congo.

Well, that is all but one man.

Benhard Janse van Rensburg appeared unmoved by the action that was unfolding in front of him, while members of the England rugby squad were unable to remain seated during the footage.

This may not be a surprise, as while the Bristol Bears star is set to make his England debut this summer, it must be remembered that he is South African and that he is only set to feature for Steve Borthwick’s side due to residency rules, having spent the last five years in the country, so he may have no interest in the progression of the Three Lions in the World Cup.

Janse van Rensburg made the decision to represent England, as it appeared that he would not be given the opportunity to play for the Springboks, following South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus’ comment this week where he claimed the 29-year-old wanted to represent his side should he had been selected.

The decision to select Janse van Rensburg has been seen as controversial by certain pockets of the England fanbase, confirmed by the comments of Danny Care on the BBC's Rugby Union Weekly podcast.

Care said: “It doesn't sit right with me to take away the opportunity for Max Ojomoh or Ollie Lawrence.

"Whether they [England] don't like those players personality-wise or on the technical side, they are two young English lads who have dreamt of playing for England.

"I know Janse van Rensburg has been over here five years and qualifies on residency, but I think playing international rugby has to be more exclusive than that."

England will face South Africa in the Nations Championship on July 4 at Ellis Park, and Joe Marler believes it will be an incredibly difficult challenge before they face Fiji and Argentina in their other summer fixtures.
