Kalyn Ponga's playing future up in the air after fourth concussion in a year

Concerns over the career future and health of Kalyn Ponga have resurfaced after the Knights star suffered yet another concussion.

The young fullback copped the brunt end of a sickening head clash within two minutes of Newcastle’s fixture with the Wests Tigers.

The 24-year-old came off his line to tackle Tigers’ Asu Kepoaoa as they clashed heads with Ponga left flattened immediately.

The Maroons representative struggled to his feet as on-field doctors rushed on to assess the damage.

The incident was labelled a ‘dramatic scene’ by Nine’s commentary team.

Andrew Johns said on commentary: “I t was always a gamble putting Kalyn in the front line defensively. That was always the worry.”

It signalled Ponga’s fourth concussion in the space of 10 months, with his 2022 season ending prematurely following three concussions in six weeks.

It comes as the NRL has restructured the Head Injury Assessment (HIA) protocols in attempt to ensure player safety.

Knights coach Adam O’Brien confirmed Ponga would miss next week’s clash with the Dolphins, however, maintained that the incident wasn’t due to the player’s tackle technique.

"I looked at his tackle technique, his tackle selection, and he got off the line quite hard, so I think it caught him by surprise," he said.

"I've seen him make that tackle a thousand times over the summer, so I'm not too concerned by that."

The Newcastle boss claimed it was ‘too early’ to determine whether Ponga’s future in rugby league would be impacted as a result of the latest injury.

However, NRL fans have grown increasingly concerned for the young player, with many admitting they are worried about his health.

One wrote: “I am far more concerned about Kalyn Ponga the young man than I am about Kalyn Ponga the rugby league player at this point. Maybe this game just wasn't made for him.”

Another said: “I'm stunned. It's hard not to get too dramatic, but I have some serious concerns about Kalyn Ponga's future in the game.”

A third added: “I actually worry how long Ponga has left to play. The amount of head injuries he has sustained in such a short period surely cannot be good for his health.”

A fourth commented: “These concussions are starting to become a real worry for Ponga to the point they could cut his career short.”
