Footage of Manchester United youngster Chido Obi training has gone viral online as the forward's absence from the first-team continues.

Following their 1-0 defeat to Wrexham in their first friendly match of pre-season, United bounced back with a dominant win over Danish side Rosenborg on Friday (July 24).

With many of the club's senior players still on holiday following their involvement in the World Cup this summer, much of the squad for the match was made up of academy players, including the highly-rated JJ Gabriel.

Among the youngsters to get some time on the pitch during the 5-0 victory was young forward Obi, who arrived from Arsenal in 2024 and was quickly integrated into the first-team squad.

Obi was named in Man Utd's senior squad for the first time on 16 February 2025, making his senior debut as a late replacement for Casemiro during a 1-0 Premier League loss at Tottenham Hotspur.

He's since gone on to make a further seven appearances for United's first-team, but appears to have been frozen out, with his last appearance being a brief spell off the bench during a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on 25 May 2025.

Although the Rosenborg friendly offered United fans a small glimpse into his progress since then, new footage of him training with the Seedorf Football Academy has been released online, and it's safe to say fans are impressed.

Several accounts on social media have claimed that the United youngster is training with Liverpool's Jeremie Frimpong in the clip. Still, it is actually his younger brother, Wesley, in the video.

Wesley Frimpong is currently without a club, having played for LASK Amateurs Upper Austria last season, and is also training with the Seedorf Football Academy.

In the video, Obi can be seen completing a series of drills with what appears to be a water tube over his shoulders before taking on Frimpong and a goalkeeper in attacking scenarios.

The 18-year-old makes it past both men on several occasions during the video, finding the back of the net with some impressive shots.

Reacting to the footage, one United fan wrote on social media: "We need to integrate him into the team asap. He will be a deadly striker with proper guidance."

Another added: "The state of some of these finishes. Nice."

While one claimed: "Kids going places. Has all the physical talent, clearly is humble and works hard. He's gonna be a problem."

Why Obi hasn't been playing for Man United

Obi was first brought into the first-team fold at United by former manager Ruben Amorim, who decided to bring Obi into the fold because of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee's poor form.

However, despite Hojlund's departure for Napoli and Zirkzee's continued struggles, he failed to make a single appearance in the 2025/26 season.

According to reports, United decided to pull back Obi's first-team involvement to address some holes in his game.

The club believes that he needs to make a 'major improvement' to his off-the-ball movement if he hopes to regularly feature against some of the biggest names in the Premier League.

But, given the promising signs shown by Obi and his fellow United youngsters, we could finally see more of the forward and other academy stars in the upcoming season.
