Fans stunned as women's rugby league player sent off for comment to male referee

The incident happened during St Helens vs York Valkyrie.

A women's rugby league player was sent off for a comment made to a male referee, and fans think they have worked out what was said.

On Saturday afternoon, St Helens produced a brilliant comeback to beat reigning champions York Valkyrie at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

York raced to an 8-0 lead thanks to Rhiannon Marshall's penalty on the stroke of half-time and Savannah Andrade's try in the early minutes of the second period.

However, despite the healthy lead, St Helens got back into the match through Emily Rudge before Phoebe Hook scored two tries in the final 10 minutes to put the Saints in full control.

In the end, a penalty from Faye Gaskin sealed an 18-8 victory.

During the match, York's Sinead Peach was sent off for dissent.

A clip of the incident was posted on social media, and it instantly went viral after fans managed to catch what Peach appeared to say to the referee. You can watch the footage below. The video contains strong language.

The referee's microphone picks up his reasoning behind the sending off stating: "I'm not having you saying 'which one are you s******g?'. You're off."

Reacting in the comments section, one fan said: "Fair play referee. Red Card all day long. Very surprising comments from the York captain."

Another tweeted: "Absolutely crazy thing to say, you know there's only going to be one result."

A third fan added: "Rugby league never fails."

Someone else wrote: "Long ban incoming? I can’t speyk."

A fifth commented: "From a team that was allowed to do whatever they wanted all game, thats a staggering remark to make to the ref."

Another fan said: "Crazy thing to say to a ref just begging for the sending off there."

As a result of their victory, St Helens are now inches away from securing home advantage for the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Wigan remain only one point behind the Saints in the race for the League Leaders' Shield after battering Barrow Raiders 92-0.

Ruby Hunter, Mia-Jayne Atherton, Eva Hunter and Jenna Foubister all registered two tries while Isabel Rowe scored a hat-trick and kicked 12 goals.

Rachel Thompson, Lucie Sams, Georgia Wilson, Charlotte Meredith, Cerys Jones and Molly Jones also got on the scoresheet.

In another match, Huddersfield and Leigh shared a 20-20 draw.
