World Cup hero Stokes hit 74 of 76 runs in the 10th wicket partnership with Jack Leach (1*). His knock also included seven sixes.
England bowled out Australia for 179 in the first innings courtesy of Jofra Archer who picked up six wickets. Though England collapsed in their first innings. The hosts could only manage 67 runs with only Joe Denly making double figures.
Australia made 246 in their second innings with England reaching the target of 359 with one wicket to spare in a thrilling test match.
Stokes delivered in the limited-overs arena as he steered England to World Cup glory earlier in the summer, and he's continuing his form into the test series.
"I don't know how I did it," said Stokes following his magnificent century. "I know we've won the game but I'm pretty tired to be honest. It was just a great day.
"It is never over till it is over and I only got nervy when it got down to the last 10. I had my pitching wedge at the perfect distance today.
"The pressure Jack is under there. Those will be the most crucial 15 balls he will ever face. He's got serious b******* to stand up and do what he did."
The Ashes resumes on September 4 as Old Trafford hosts the fourth test with the score 1-1.
