Ben Stokes has hit back at an Australian newspaper after they branded England 'crybabies' following the controversy in the second Ashes test match.

Jonny Bairstow's controversial dismissal in England's second innings marred Australia's 43-run win at Lords.

Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey dismissed his counterpart after stumping him in an extremely controversial moment.

Bairstow had wandered out of his crease believing the ball to be dead. After leaving his ground, Carey hurled the ball at the stamps, resulting in the player's wicket.

The incident angered Stuart Broad who spoke out when he came to the crease, slamming Carey and Pat Cummins during his knock.

Bairstow's dismissal has been received differently down under, with The West Australian taking aim at England captain Stokes, who smashed a stunning 155.

The Australian media outlet branded Stokes' team as 'crybabies' to which he responded with an expert put down.

On Twitter, he wrote: "That’s definitely not me, since when did I bowl with the new ball."

The England all-rounder shared his thoughts on his teammate's dismissal following the result on Sunday.

"Jonny was in his crease, then out of his crease to come down and have the chat," he said.

"I am not disputing the fact it is out because it is out."

The 32-year-old added: "Would I want to win a game in that manner? The answer for me is no.

"When is it justified that the umpires have called over? Is the on-field umpires making movement... is that enough to call over? I'm not sure.

"If the shoe was on the other foot, I would have put more pressure on the umpires and asked whether they had called over and had a deep think about the whole spirit of the game and if I would want to do something like that."

England trail Australia 2-0 ahead of the third test match, which starts on Thursday at Headingley.
