Everything you need to know about the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony

The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham is finally upon us.

The action begins with the opening ceremony, and then over the next two weeks over 6,500 athletes will compete in 19 various sports.

Diver Jack Laugher and weightlifter Emily Campbell have been chosen to bear the flag for England.

The producer of the ceremony, Stephen Knight, who also created Peaky Blinders, told the BBC ahead of the games:

"A lot of opening ceremonies are visually spectacular but emotionally quite timid, I think, but this one is very emotional.

"It's got a story to tell. It's about the people of Birmingham. So it's the story of what the city has achieved, and how it's achieved it by the people that are here.

"It feels like it's Birmingham's turn to shine - and this show certainly shines."

The Queen, who is head of the Commonwealth, won't be able to watch it in person, but Prince Charles will be there in her place.
