James Anderson's decision over cricket career will be tinged with sadness after surprise Lancashire call made

Lancashire have informed James Anderson that they will not be extending his contract, it has been reported.

Anderson, 44, played his last Test match in June 2024 after being informed by Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum that he was no longer under consideration to be selected by England. He has continued playing for his home county Lancashire, though, and took 50 wickets at an average of just 17.68 in Division Two of the County Championship last season. But legendary former England and Lancashire opener Michael Atherton, writing in The Times, reported on Wednesday afternoon that the Red Rose had decided not to offer Anderson an extension to his contract to enable him to continue his career in 2027.

James Anderson's huge career decision now outlined

The 44-year-old pace bowler, who is England's all-time leading wicket-taker with 704 Test scalps, was named as captain of Lancashire's red ball side last season as they attempted to earn promotion back to Division One.

They started well under new permanent head coach Steven Croft - himself a former long-serving Lancashire player - winning two and drawing one of their opening three County Championship matches.

But their red-ball season from then on was a disaster. Lancashire did not win any of their remaining 11 matches, did not score a first innings batting point between May and the final game of the season against Durham, and were only denied the first-class wooden spoon by Gloucestershire, who beat Lancashire at Old Trafford in the third-to-last fixture.

A growing divide between the club's board and its members reached breaking point in 2026, with chief executive Daniel Gidney announcing in April that he would retire at the end of the season. Director of cricket performance Mark Chilton, who had received heavy criticism from supporters over his decision-making, has also left the club.

Some positive steps have been taken - including the appointment of former England assistant coach Paul Farbrace, who has left Sussex to become director of cricket across both the women's and men's teams. Lancashire's women's team won the One Day Cup and the inaugural Women's T20 County Cup in 2025 but found this season more challenging; they blooded several promising youngsters this season and will surely head into 2027 all the better for doing so.

Who made Lancashire's James Anderson decision - and what is next

It appears that the men's side is going down the same route; the Daily Mail report that Farbrace and Lancashire's new chief executive, Richard Kenyon, informed Anderson of the club's decision - and the outlet adds that Anderson will not seek to join another new county for what would have been the first time in his career.

It is claimed that Anderson had planned to continue his career for a further season with the Red Rose - which will have no doubt made his reported decision to finally call time, after 25 years as a professional, even tougher.

If he was to join another county, that would tell a story in itself: Anderson has never played for anyone else but Lancashire.

And another reason will be that his final season in cricket will have been played under the backdrop of turmoil at Lancashire, despite his best efforts with the ball. Only six bowlers - one of them being his team-mate George Balderson - took more wickets in Division Two last season.

Those numbers only served to enhance Anderson's legacy; particularly in his decision to put his body through the stresses and strains of fast bowling across 11 of Lancashire's 14 County Championship matches. No Red Rose fan would have been upset with Anderson if he'd called time on his career after being sidelined by England. Instead, he carried on for two entire seasons, took on the red-ball captaincy and made himself available for every game he physically could. He even returned to T20 cricket for the first time since 2014.

Lancashire will now have the unenviable task of replacing England's greatest-ever bowler. The short answer is: they can't. But what Lancashire do now have, at least, is a seasoned and savvy operator in Farbrace to decide on what is next - and you cannot imagine him making such a big call without having a plan in mind.
