Furious golf fans rip into Masters coverage for 'ignoring' one player on opening day

The first day of golf's first major of the year was full of thrills and spills but fans are unhappy about the treatment of one golfer in the TV coverage.

The Masters is led by England's Justin Rose, who heads up the leaderboard at seven-under after a phenomenal opening round. The chasing pack is three shots back and includes defending champion Scottie Scheffler.

Rose is seven shots clear of Rory McIlroy despite a good start by the Northern Irishman, who will resume his quest for the Green Jacket at level par after declining to speak to the media at the end of his first round.

Nicely poised at three-under after an opening round of 69 at the famous Augusta National Golf Club is two-time US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau.

Fans watching on television have voiced their dismay at DeChambeau's lack of presence in the Masters coverage on day one.

The 31-year-old Texan won the US Open in 2020 and 2024 and is a popular figure thanks in part to his YouTube channel, which has attracted 1.8 million subscribers in five years.

But the LIV Golf competitor barely featured in the first day of this year's Masters coverage and wasn't shown at all unless he was playing one of the featured holes.

Given an impressive opening round and his growing popularity, fans think DeChambeau should have been on camera more.

"One of the most popular players this week is Bryson DeChambeau and yet there's no way to watch him unless he's on a featured hole," posted one user on X, formerly Twitter. "How ridiculous."

Another tagged in the official Masters account to direct their complaint: "Why would Bryson DeChambeau not be included in a featured group? He is by far one of the most popular golfers…"

"Back to back birdies for Bryson DeChambeau. It's a real treat to watch the leaderboard update instead of actually watching his shots because The Masters has terrible coverage," wrote one user, rooting their frustration in the Texan's performance rather than his popularity.

If that nicely executed piece of sarcasm appears laced with annoyance, it has nothing on the poster who treated their six followers to this fine slice of scorched earth:

"HOW TF IS BRYSON DECHAMBEAU THE MOST POPULAR GOLFER OUT THERE AND MAJORITY FAVORITE TO WIN NOT HAVING ANY COVERAGE AT ALL THIS BROADCASTING IS A JOKE LOOK AT HIS NUMBERS THIS IS WHO THE PEOPLE WANT TO WATCH DO BETTER!!!!!!"

Round two of the Masters begins on Friday at 1.00pm UK time.
