Bryson DeChambeau loses cool after nightmare LIV Golf start as $500m contract decision looms

LIV Golfer Bryson DeChambeau had a slow start on day one of LIV New York as angry footage has emerged of the American while he awaits a new contract.

The 32-year-old shot five over par on his opening round at Trump Bedminster as he was hoping to take the battle for the LIV Golf title into the final week.

To do that, DeChambeau needs to outscore John Rahm by 19.04 points to have a chance of preventing the Spaniard from winning his fourth LIV title in a row.

Therefore, the 32-year-old would need a top three finish at the very least, while hoping that Rahm finishes outside of the top 15.

Third place would earn DeChambeau 24 points, while 15th place give Rahm the minimum four points he would require.

Although, that would all change if DeChambeau was to climb even higher with second and first place earning 30 and 40 points respectively, but the part-time YouTuber would still need to better Rahm’s score.

Should there be any ties across the field, then the relevant points would be added up and divided equally, which is where the decimal point scoring comes into play.

However, after the opening day on the 7,651-yard New Jersey course, the California born golfer has left himself tied in 49th place and five over par, ten shots behind where he needs to be.

Meanwhile, Rahm didn’t fare too much better as he is currently earning himself the minimum one point, as he went around the 71-par course just one over, which left him in 24th place and in the final points scoring spot.

DeChambeau will certainly want to improve on that as he faces an uncertain future with his contract expiring at the end of the season but looks like he will have to wait to add to his five LIV Golf titles.

He showed his frustration surrounding his poor start when he walked onto the fifth tee already four over par, and angrily threw his bottle at a nearby bin.

But, in a rather ironic fashion, given his terrible start, he actually missed the target from close range.

He did recover slightly after that as he parred every hole up to the tenth and managed a birdie on 11, unfortunately it didn’t last long though as he made bogeys on holes 15 and 16.

This comes in the same week that the golfer led a players only meeting before the weekend began, as they discussed their next steps as LIV announced its new funding for the 2027 season.

It has been a rocky few months for the breakaway league after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced that it would be moving away from sport, and therefore would no longer bankroll the event that has already cost them a reported £1billion.

Although, that was resolved earlier this week as they announced new unnamed lead investors which left DeChambeau awaiting the offer of his expected $500million contract.
