Verstappen won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and 2021 Formula One World Championship on Sunday in a dramatic finale.

Nicholas Latifi's crash with six laps to go saw a safety car introduced, which allowed Verstappen the chance to catch up to Hamilton.

The season came down to one lap and McLaren's Ricciardo had a seat anyone would be envious of.

He was lapped by the duo and found himself directly behind them for the last stretch.

Verstappen hovered behind Hamilton and the safety car before the duo engaged in a thrilling duel under the United Arab Emirates moonlight.

Ricciardo came 12th in the race and eighth overall in the season, and he was asked about the duel in front of him post-race.

The Australian told Fox Sport: “I don’t want you to ask me ... I want to ask you. Tell me, tell me what happened.

“Crazy. Crazy, crazy finale.

“I said before the weekend, there’s no loser.

“They’ve both done everything possible ... but of course, for Lewis to lose it on the last lap, that’s a tough one today.

“We did a one-lap restart, I’m sitting right behind Lewis and Max, like, why am I here? I don’t know.

"It was very interesting.”

Mercedes made two complaints about the end of the race in an attempt to get the result overturn.

"Firstly, big congratulations to Max and to his team," Hamilton said to start things off.

"But I'm so proud of my own team and we gave it absolutely everything and we never gave up. I've felt great in the car the past couple of months, particularly at the end. We'll see what happens next year."
