Hannah Waddingham causes chaos with controversial Lewis Hamilton comment at the British Grand Prix

Hannah Waddingham has stirred up one of Formula 1’s most controversial subjects after her Lewis Hamilton comment at the British Grand Prix.

On Sunday, F1 returned to England as the annual British Grand Prix took place at the famous Silverstone circuit.

Ahead of the race, Ted Lasso star Waddingham was stopped by Channel 4’s David Coulthard for a short interview.

Making a reference to her recent TV appearances, Coulthard said: “I’ve been binge-watching you! You’ve been making appearances everywhere.” Waddingham replied: “Have you? I know people must be sick of the sight of me, I do apologise.”

Whilst speaking about Hamilton, Waddingham caused chaos after she mentioned the Brit as an eight-time world champion. You can watch the footage below.

She said: “I’ve waited a long time to be here. Am I allowed to say that I’m very much looking forward to seeing Lewis Hamilton, eight-time champion?”

Coulthard replied: “You can say whatever you want! I don't think many people would disagree with that. He's a legend of the sport.”

Waddingham added: “Oh my god, is he ever. I mean he's just phenomenal and I hope I get to meet him and give him a little curtsey.”

Now, Hamilton has only won the F1 title seven times but many fans felt he was robbed of his eighth title in 2021.

During the last Grand Prix of the season, Hamilton was well on course to clinch the title as he led for the majority of the race.

However, under the safety car, race director Michael Masi allowed several lapped cars between Hamilton and Max Verstappen to unlap themselves, paving the way for the Red Bull driver to overtake Hamilton in the last lap.

As a result, the championship was snatched away from Hamilton’s grasp right at the death.

F1 fans were quick to react to Waddingham’s comment on social media.

One said: “Hannah Waddingham slaying live on tv calling Lewis an 8-time wdc and asking if she can say that lmaooo queen.”

Another tweeted: “HANNAH WADDINGHAM CALLED LEWIS A 8x WORLD CHAMP?? OH I LOVE HER.”

A third fan added: “We already knew she was golden but saying 8 time world champion Lewis Hamilton puts Hannah Waddingham in a new league. Hero.”

Someone else wrote: “Like I said, whatever Hannah Waddingham says is the law.”

In the end, it was Verstappen who eased to victory once again as he continues his dominance over the rest of the grid.
