"It must be a stunt" - Wesley Sneijder can't believe Man Utd want Wout Weghorst

"It must be a stunt" - Wesley Sneijder can't believe Man Utd want Wout Weghorst

Weghorst is reportedly on the verge of swapping a loan at Besiktas for a move to United, with Erik ten Hag looking to add a striker.

Wesley Sneijder is so surprised by Manchester United's move for Wout Weghorst that the former Inter Milan star thinks it has to be a 'stunt.'

It's fair to say that the news over the weekend that United were targeting Weghorst for a loan move until the end of the season came as a shock to most.

The very idea seemed pretty laughable out of the blocks but then there he was, the Dutch striker, seemingly waving goodbye to Besiktas.

He's currently on loan in Turkey and after scoring at the weekend it looked like he was ready to leave them behind and move to Old Trafford.

There were reports that the striker could be bought out of his current temporary deal for just £2.5 million, which would be a decent price.

However, Besiktas put out a statement to deny those claims, saying, "The initiative regarding Wout Weghorst belongs entirely to Besiktas Gymnastics Club."

Despite that, Erik ten Hag's side look to be going full steam ahead to bring the Burnley player to Old Trafford until the end of the season.

Some might think it's an astute piece of business for the club but former Netherlands player Sneijder clearly isn't impressed with it.

"I think they’ve seen the trick with the free kick [in the quarter-final of the World Cup against Argentina], so they don’t fall for that in England anymore," he told VP.

"In terms of striker, is he really someone United are waiting for? I don’t think so.

"They still have 300 of those in the Premier League. It must be a stunt. This really can’t be true."

Weghorst came off the bench during Netherland's World Cup quarter final game with Argentina, and made a huge impact on the game.

The 30-year-old scored twice, including from a ridiculous free-kick routine in the last minute of injury time, to bring his side level from 2-0 down.

Louis van Gaal's side eventually lost on penalties, with Argentina going on to win the World Cup on another shoot-out in the final.

Certainly Weghorst's impact came as a surprise to fans of the Premier League, who saw him fail during his time at Burnley last season, when he scored just twice in 20 appearances and couldn't keep them up.

However, United were actually implored to sign an even more surprising Dutch striker, with Marco van Basten suggesting they should sign Luuk de Jong instead.

It isn't the first time that a former Dutch star hasn't been impressed with United, although in the past it's been a player who already plays for them.

On a number of occasions Rafael van der Vaart has gone in hard on Harry Maguire, saying the defender goes home to his wife and tells her he's 'sh*t at football.'

We wonder what he'll have to say about Weghorst if the transfer doesn't work out.
