Fans slam 'useless' Wout Weghorst as Netherlands lose 4-2 to Croatia

Fans slam 'useless' Wout Weghorst as Netherlands lose 4-2 to Croatia

Wout Weghorst played in his national side's defeat to Croatia.

Wout Weghorst has been slammed by fans following his 'useless' performance in the Netherlands' crushing 4-2 loss to Croatia.

Weghorst, who replaced Xavi Simons in the 64th minute, came on as a substitute in Wednesday's Nations League clash in Rotterdam.

He entered the fray with the game 1-1 as Croatia went onto reach the Nations League final following a thrilling victory in extra-time.

Donyell Malen opened the scoring, with Andrej Kramaric levelling from the spot. Mario Pasalic then put his side in the lead before Noa Lang scored a dramatic equaliser in the 96th minute.

Though Bruno Petkovic and Luka Modric scored in extra-time to seal a big win for Croatia.

Dutch fans took aim at Weghorst after their defeat as they made their feelings known on social media.

One Twitter user wrote: "Nah Wout Weghorst is beyond useless."

A second tweeted: "This guy got some unnecessary hype after that late goal against Argentina."

A third added: "Erik ten Hag deserves huge credits for finishing 3rd in the PL and winning a trophy with Wout Weghorst as a striker."

A fourth joked: "Weghorst being useless and Malacia making random fouls, where’ve I read this script before."

Another commented: "Honestly that game at the WC against Argentina is what got him a loan move to United, outside of that game he’s one of the worst strikers I think I’ve ever seen."

Weghorst has enjoyed a spell on loan at Manchester United this season, with Ten Hag drafting him to the club following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

He played 31 games in all competitions following his move in January, but bagged just two goals - and failed to score in the Premier League.

The 30-year-old is set to be let go by the club ahead of the new season. He's been recently linked with a move to Sean Dyche's Everton.
