Wayne Rooney has been named the greatest British footballer of all time in a new fan poll with over 50,000 votes.

The Manchester United legend won the lot at club level over a decorated 13 year stint at Old Trafford.

Rooney finished his career with five Premier League titles, three League Cups, the FA Cup, the Champions League and the Europa League and is also United's all time top goalscorer with 253 in all competitions.

He'd play a key role in all those sides alongside a number of strike partners. From Ruud van Nistelrooy to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and everyone in between, Rooney knew how to get them ticking.

The England international wasn't too shabby for his country either, despite what many say.

Rooney is the Three Lions' top goalscorer with 53 goals in 120 appearances. He's the second most-capped player in history behind Peter Shilton.

He never won a major honour with England and that being viewed as a disappointment is a testament to the talent he had.

40 per cent of SPORTbible readers picked Rooney as their top British player, a whopping 13 per cent more than Northern Ireland icon George Best.

The former United winger is regarded as one of the best players of all time and had a big personality to go along with that.

Best spent 11 years at with the Red Devils and was one of the first footballers to become a mainstream celebrity.

It would have an impact on his lifestyle however and Best battled with alcoholism throughout his life.

He tragically died in 2005 after a battle with illness, aged 59.

Gareth Bale comes in at third and he'll go down as one of the most decorated British talents, despite a turbulent time at Real Madrid.

Once the most expensive player in the world, Bale's time in the Spanish capital turned sour quite quickly and he'll be departing as a free agent this summer.

That hasn't stopped him collecting 16 trophies and being a decider in two Champions League finals.

He put Real ahead against Atletico Madrid in 2014 before scoring a double against Liverpool in 2018, including that overhead kick.

On the international front, he's just helped Wales qualify for their first World Cup in 64 years.

Kenny Dalglish ranks fourth and there won't be many who remember him on the pitch, similar to Best, but he was a special player.

He's referred to as 'King Kenny' at Anfield for a reason and FourFourTwo called him the best British striker of the 20th century back in 2009.
